You're confusing fact with opinion.

The talent that went into, and the skill that was used to make an album determines if it's good or not. Not whether or not you like it.

Hmm, okay. You don't count the end result as part of whether it's good enough. Fair enough. But I do. If something took painstaking effort and incredible skill to make, but still manages to suck harder than Puff Daddy covering the Police, it's not good in my mind. I won't call it good. And I'll argue with anyone who calls it good. I consider skill and effort irrelevant when they don't deliver.

I understand what you're saying, even if someone puts a lot of time and effort into something, if it's not good, then it's not good.

But personal preference (sucking) is completely relative, while skill has at least a small quantitative value. The problem here is that FoolThemAll is talking about a band being good or not good(enjoyable) in the relative sense. Jace Tsunami is talking about a band being good or not good (skill) in the quantitative sense.

That's why I think both of you are right.

That's the gist of it. Except that I see the quantitative part as being far less important than the relative part in determining what is good. The end result is what's most important, most relevant. If Jace wants to make the claim that they are highly skilled, okay, that's fine. But it doesn't necessarily make them good. Not by my definition.

And he still hasn't proved that they are skilled. He said that'd be too much work? Too bad. If you're going to claim that your words are fact, you have to be able to back it up.

"That's the way it is" isn't good enough if you want to show that the criteria for a band being good does not, in fact, include having good results.

Show me how a band could logically be 'great', yet put out nothing but lackluster results, and I'll conceed to your criteria. But you haven't done that yet. The closest you've come is "Because I said so." And that doesn't cut it.
