Create your own songs??

Post by Setra » Sun Mar 16, 2003 4:07 pm

I was thinking...we are always searching for the perfect song to fit an anime for an AMV...the biggest problem I've found though, is that most of the time, its already been done, more than once...and then you don't feel like doing that, because its already been done. So then I get this idea...

Make our own music!! :D !!

Now, I don't know wuch about the software, yet, that will be needed for this (any suggestions would help :) ) But I know a good amount about music. But just think, we can our own songs, own rifts, breaks, transitions and all that stuff, and use the music instead of the lyrics in order to create a song that fits for the anime as we see it. You can have a full rock set behind you, or an entire symphony. (I think a techno-symphony song done to Spriggan would be AWESOME :D and thats actually what I plan to do first) So now, not only do we have the chance to fit music and anime together to form a masterpiece, but we can get the chance to MAKE the music that, in the creators opinion, fits the anime perfectly. So we get the pleasure of both perfecting the anime syncs, but the musical syncs as well.

This might be weird, maybe dumb, or maye its just another one of my childish dreams, but I think that people could truly use this. We wouldn't have to worry about people already using the songs, because they are not yet created.

Whenever I find out how to get the musical department working on my computer, I plan to do a couple of things:
1) (like I listed earlier) Make a techno-symphony to do to Spriggan.
2) Make a dramtic piano solo to do to Grave of the Firelies. -and-
3) Make my own jazz song for Cowboy Bebop.

What do you guys think?? Could this be done??

(If anybody knows ANYTHING about software and all that stuff, plz let me know, either in this post, or PM me :D )

This is something I've been toying with for a while now. I'm in the process of writing my own accoustic piece for an amv. Once I get the guitar down, I'm going to try and add whatever I can to help improve the song. As far as software goes...Soundforge. A bit pricey, but iut's a great program.

My current AMV has a couple songs I've made in it. It won't be released for a while. Guessing AWA9. I've also posted some of my music here, with little reponse.

Now, if you're looking for software...ooh man it's a large world out there. I use a tracker called Renoise 1.3, Reaktor 3, Absynth 1.3, Cubase SX, Soundforge, and samples i've created, recorded, or received from a piece of software called Reason. I also use a lot of MIDI input devices and synths.

If you're looking for softsynths, Absynth is the way to go. Basically Native Instruments has a huge hold on the music creation world, but it depends on what you plan on doing.

If you're looking for experimental software, for experimental music, check out any tracker out there, MD recorders, Reaktor 3, and any VSTs you can find.

If you're recording live instruments, Cubase is the best thing out there.

Soundforge is great for manipulating samples and recording, basically anything in.

I'm considering recording my own voice with a mic, and making (hopefully my last) trailer using my own lines and quotes. I plan on making the trailer this way because the "movie" in the trailer is pretty much how I feel about a situation I recently went through. :| That and I wrote a screenplay about the situation, so you could say that the trailer is advertising the screenplay.

Thanx a lot you guys :D !! It really helps.

But I have moe more question...I've heard a rumor that there is a program, or two, where I can actually place notes on staff and then have it play me back whatever I just wrote. And it can also do layers, and write in whatever I want. Like violins, trumpets, and all that stuff. What the guy told me, is, if I wanted 500 violins playing the melody, I could have 500 playing, and all that stuff. The only problem is, that he doesn't know the name of it. I don't know if its true or not. I'm interested in that, because I come up with these really complex lines and whatnot, but I'm not yet good enough to play them at tempo. :x

But thanx again for the software advice. I'm going to go do some reaserch and see what all I can find out. :D

There are many programs like that, also depending on what platform you have, you can get different software.

Stuff you'll want would be something like Cakewalk Sonar (PC/MAC), eMagic Logic 5.5 (5.0 Final was for the PC, the rest are for MAC), Fruity Loops (forgot to state that in previous post), and I believe Cubase SX also lets you import VSTs and place notes on a staff. I'm not too sure, I've just used that to record lyrics.

The program that'll probably be best for you would be Propellerhead's "Reason 2.5"(PC/MAC). 2.5 just came out and it's suppose to be extremely uber. This is the program that got me into creating music actually, and it comes with an assload of samples (I believe the official version is about 3 discs long). There's no staff, but going into edit more, there's a Piano Roll (a visual of a piano that allows you to edit and place your notes on beat, in key, etc.). Reason is quite powerful when it comes to setting up mixing racks (press TAB and you get to view all the wires in the back...oooo...snazzy :P). As for advanced music features, 2.5 allows the ability to add Ritards! WOO! finally! (previously unavailable), and key and time signature changes.

Once you really get into it, get another program that's more advanced, like eMagic Logic. It's most excellent and comes with a lot of features (and is VST compatable :-D).

Now, VSTs are interesting things that you should really get to know about. They're the wave of the future when it comes to music creation. VSTs and Virtual Effects were created by Steinburg originally, but there have been SDK releases, and people have been making their own. VSTs are basically your virtual instruments (Native Instruments makes THE BEST). People make them independently and share them across the internet, or they sell them. Which is legal :p. The most powerful VSTs out there are Reaktor 3 (which is a program that acts as a VST) and Absynth (which is primarily for synths). You can actually make your own instruments in these two programs, and import them into VST compatable trackers or mixers. It's good stuff...now if I can only remember what VST stood for, I'd be set *L*

All in all, Reason 2.5 is most definitely the program you want. It's not VST compatable, but it's a start.

I use Renoise 1.3, Reaktor 3, Absynth, and some VSTs. And trackers are pretty hard to get used to (things like Impulse Tracker, Fast Tracker, Mod Tracker, etc.) It's like programming a song.

Anyway, I hope this helped :p ja!

In Addition to what Zerophite has just stated theres another program that i use called "Fruityloops 3" it's a pretty sweet program with a piano roll for complex chords and a simple place note on beat here type system. It also has some pretty sweet samples that come with. I've been dabbling and only have about 1:30 done on a song that i'm currently writing.
Love and Peace! ^_^

I give fruity loops 3928473 thumbs up, even though i havnt fooled around with it enough to use it well, but its fun as hell just sitting around and listening to the beat you've made over and over again.

A BIG Thanx to everybody that has just given me help!! :D And a special thanx to Zerophite \m/ ^o^ \m/ I've been checking them all out, and they look really good so far. I talked to my music teacher at school, and I found THE program I was looking for as my "Base Of Operations." Its called Sibelius 2. It is EXACTLY what I was thinking of. (But it costs a bit much... :x ) (But I'm gonna put down the dough because I've been saving up for a new computer and I can afford it) But it will be sooo worth it. I can conduct FULL symphony with it. I can do WHATEVER, musically, that I want to. And then I plan to use the programs that you guys listed to make my techno back beats, and then mix the two together. :D :D :D

Thanx again for everything.

For an idea of what I plan to make...search for the song "Finished Symphony" by Mix Master Mike. Sorry that I couldn't post a link...but I've only found it on KaZaA.
