Gargoyles airing on Toon Disney

Post by Chaos Angel » Fri Mar 14, 2003 5:39 pm

It's been a very long time since I saw this series, and I was so glad to see that it is airing again.

My sis was watching Toon Disney when I saw them advertise Gargoyles as part of their line-up. It's on Mon-Fri at 10:30 PM and 10:00 and 10:30 PM Saturday and Sunday.

For those who have not seen Gargoyles, it's an American animated action/drama series with an actual plot and real characters. The premise is that the primary characters are five gargoyles, incredibly strong creatures who sleep during the day by turning into stone, only to break out of their shells each night. These five are the only survivors of their people's massacre at the hand of vikings in 995 AD. They are placed under a spell which causes them to sleep until "the castle rises above the clouds". A wealthy billionaire buys the castle and transports it to the top of his skyscraper in modern-day New York to awaken them so he can use them as hitmen and body guards. The series is, I believe, 96 episode's long, and very well written and animated with good VAs and everything. Star Trek fans will likely notice Jonathan Frakes, Marna Sirtis, Brent Spiner, and Kate Mulgrew amnong the voice cast.

Now that I know it's airing, I intend to watch it again, because it was on years ago and I haven't seen it in a damn long time. And I know there are at least a few people onm this forum who also liked the series, so I thought I'd post a note here.

This is old news. Its been airing there for years now there I think. The downside is the eps airing are edited and censored a bit from when they aired originally. And a couple eps they wont even air anymore, like the one where Elisa gets shot, and although im not sure, I have yet to see them air the ep Upgrade again, when The Pack get all there cybernetics and stuff. Its one of the coolest eps too if you havent seen it.

I've seen Upgrade on Toon Disney, it wasn't cut out. However, I do agree that they cut out certain parts, like when Oberon gets shot by an iron arrow by Thanatos' father, or when Coyote gets his head crushed by Goliath. Bah, even at night time they don't even show uncut episodes. ¬¬

Actually, the series is 78 eps long divided into 3 seasons.

It was originally gonna end on the 2nd season but the main producer of the show quit and new writers took over which made the 3rd season not as great as the first 2.

Season 3 wasn't Goliath Chronicles, was it?

::stabs GC::

I didn't know it was old news, but AFAIK, it should be on normal Disney, which is on basic cable. I may have been mistaken, but that was the impression I got.

Season 3 was Goliath Chronicles.

It had the best opening sequence in my opinion. Although I felt it was the DBGT of Gargoyles.

I wish Disney had supported the Gargoyles series more and had continued on the idea of making animation for an older audience.

I certainly enjoy Disney's "family" films, because I don't feel that their animated films treat children like idiots... (which doesn't seem to apply when it comes to their live action crap)

Still... there isn't a lot of good animation in America. Most shows are either commercials with a plot or just lazy.

WB's Batman: The Animated Series was a real chance for better animation in the US... Batman was originally supposed to be aired at prime time and be targetted for a more adult audience, but WB didn't support their plan and let Batman land in the kids programming.

A real pitty, because the writing in that was top notch and it could have really started breaking the American viewpoint that animation isn't just for kids.

Disney's Gargoyles had the same problem. It was a great show, but it was held back by how good it could have been because it still had to be treated as a kid's show.

Like Batman, the show really tried to push the limits as much as possible, but it was still considered "children's programming" because it was animated.

I am glad to see Gargoyles has come back and I hope Disney decides to put the show out (unedited) on DVD.

Personally, Castor, I loathed the GC OP. I thought it was just cheap and bad.

Same here, Milo. Gargoyles uncut on DVDs would own.

Yes, I, too, wish that American animation would be taken more seriously. Hopefully, I can do something about that... I am planning to take animation production classes in conjunction with my filmmaking major next semester...

BTW, everyone, I messed up. I thought Toon Disney was just a name for an animation block on the Disney Channel, not a seperate network. You need digital cable for it. My bad.

::has no digital:: ::cries::
