I liked the opening of this a lot.
I encourage all editors to resist the temptation to use those Slam Zoom Transitions like the ones at 0:37-0:39, they're sync'ed in time to the piano notes really nicely but... this is such a quiet song and a hyper-kinetic camera motion like that doesn't really fit the mood,
IMHO.
It's one of the simplest moments of the whole video but the crossfade you used at 1:10-1:11 matches the soft and warm tone of the music so perfectly. The zoom transition you use at 1:12 didn't really work for me because the next shot it leads into is totally static.
I love the fade to black transitions you use from 1:19-1:29. It's simple and pretty and matches the emotional tone of the scene.
The zoom transitions in the sequence after this after dizzying and blur out tons of the scene.
Less than halfway through the AMV, I'm kind of inclined to wish that both the onscreen text and the dialogue samples had just been left out of this. The scenes
can work with the music alone. If you believe in song and the emotional connection it has to the story that you're trying to tell and the scenes that you're looking to use, dare to let this combination convey these feelings to the viewer without lots of audio and text annotations! This is the essence of the Music Video.
You do this
really well from 1:40 to about 2:20. There's more dialogue at 2:21 and... okay, even I don't know if I could have resisted including this, it's such a huge dramatic moment and it does feel like, if there's any moment where this kind of thing is called for, this would be it.
The dialogue from 2:40 to 2:54 is really struggling to compete with the lyrics of the song. I know that's what the subtitles are for, but this just feels like such a big pileup of stuff to take in and process when I really just want to sit back and
feel the music and the visuals.
When the red-haired character screams at 3:12 it's less of an issue for me because there's no singing in the song. I think that's the big difference for me.
Not a big fan of the effect used at 3:23 BUT I actually think it kind of works here because the song is really reaching its climax and it's fitting to pick up the pace like this. And the way the clips zoom out like that kind of matches the "motions" of the string section that comes into the song here.
The part at 3:30 works pretty well too, a fitting way to play off the climax of the song.
I advise everyone who wants to use subtitles like this to submit them to someone for proofreading before exporting your finished video. The value of a second set of eyes here is so critical.
I'm not good with fonts at all, but I hated the font used in this video. That's just my opinion, other viewers might like it.
I enjoyed this as a story about these three characters growing up and facing adversity and everything they experienced together. The eventual conclusion, where they seem to pass the torch to Naruto, kind of feels disconnected from everything else you presented before this point. However, iirc that was pretty much how it went down in the anime so that's not really on you. I mean, you
are faithfully presenting the material here as it is.
This is why everyone should disable the end cards (or whatever they're called). This is the conclusion of the video and it's kind of pretty and poetic and then I'm just hit with these popups that cannot be removed no matter what. I
hate these things.
This video was pretty good. Take my comments with a grain of salt or a whole spoonful.
