My first AMV - Feedback request

Post by Wandering Mist » Sat Feb 22, 2020 11:13 am

Hi all

I've always wanted to get into video editing and making AMVs so I finally took the plunge and made my first AMV:

Software - Adobe Premiere

Overall I'm quite happy with it although I know there is definitely room for improvement. This was also my first time using Adobe Premiere so I didn't know how to put in any effects or special transitions in. That's something I'll be sure to learn a bit more on for my next project. That said, any feedback from more experienced creators would be amazing to help me on my way.

Thanks in advance :)

Congrats! You're now officially an AMV Editor! |:>

The first tip that I'd give you is to not use footage that has subtitles hard subbed into them. And if that's all you have, then you should zoom in to crop them off.

The 2nd tip that I'll give you is to now imagine yourself dancing to the song while you're editing. And every time you'd take another step, or do a new move, you should either sync something or cut to another scene. Your scenes in this video lingered for a long time, and so I feel that this trick can help you understand the flow of the song and how to keep your video in pace with it.

Also, here's a guide on sync that I feel that every AMV editor should read at least once viewtopic.php?f=2&t=92942

Wish you luck in all your future videos, and welcome to the community :D

Haha thanks Kireblue.

Yeah I ideally would have used non-subbed footage but since this anime is so new I only have access to subs. I'll definitely try the zooming technique the next time I need to use subbed footage.

Thanks for the link to that guide, I'll take a look at it and try to do better with the syncing next time.

Oh, one quick question. I noticed when I uploaded to youtube the max resolution I got was 480p. How do I get it to 1080p? Is it purely down to the quality of the footage I use or did I not render the AMV properly in Adobe?

If 480p is the max resolution that youtube is offering you, then that must be the resolution of the file that you uploaded. YouTube doesn't upscale for you, so whatever you put in is what you get out. I personally don't feel that 1080p is necessary for AMVs most of the time, so I usually just stick to 720p

Really good opening. A little slow, but so is the song.

The cut at 0:47 felt very abrupt, kind of a sudden scene change that might have been smoothed over by fading to black or... something else? I don't know. The tone of the song is still very somber and slow and quiet, but then we get a very big visual shift from a dark and moody and atmospheric shot to a sudden meadow with lots of movement... and subtitles! Subtitles feel like a big visual intrusion when they appear with the shot here.

Shifting to the "battle" scenes along with the changes in the song works pretty effectively. Cutting to black at 1:37 works great, too.

I had to stop watching at about 1:45, it was too violent for me to handle. I do think you're off to a good start and will continue to improve with every edit. Good job establishing a serious and epic tone in this one.
