Three AMV's with FLCL and the pillows!

Post by XIII » Thu Jun 27, 2019 7:43 am

I've made three AMV's with FLCL and the pillows using songs from the three pillows albums that were used for the FLCL soundtrack, with the last two being songs not used in the soundtrack itself.

Each video has a different pace and theme:

The first one captures the fast and silly side of FLCL,

The second, the slow and tranquil side of the series,

And the last one represents FLCL's mix of drama and action.

I hope you watch and enjoy them!

I have yet to watch the other two you've posted.

But this is really good and I can't recommend it enough.

I guess I had a certain hesitation to watch this, like if someone made a Final Fantasy VII video set to "One Winged Angel," I'd probably wonder what the whole point of it was. So FLCL+The Pillows doesn't really light up my curiosity. And I'm sure it's been done before. But I don't think I've seen another FLCL AMV that just nails the tone of the series in such a meaningful and specific way. You're not really taking huge creative license with any of it here, but I think I need to let go of the idea that that's somehow a prerequisite for making a great AMV.

I love the relaxed pace of this video. Straight cuts give it a lean and unpolished sort of feel that actually sets it far apart from most videos made today (while generally just being done better than most AMVs of yore that it could be ostensibly be compared to). There's just enough flourishes of quick cuts and sequences of perfectly-timed internal sync to surprise and keep these four and a half minutes from feeling a little too laid back.

This AMV perfectly captures everything that was and is special about this anime and this music. It's everything that anyone would probably expect before watching even a second of it, and yet, the depth of feeling in that is way more than we're used to getting.
