Shin-AMV wrote:My understanding of the reviews thread, despite the tongue-in-cheek title, was to be constructive and useful as a whole while being rather playful with the shade throwing banter and silliness in between the reviews. Yeah we all need to sack up a little cause we're going to hear stuff we don't like or some hard truths about editing choices, styles, or preferences.(Fuck Safe Spaces) However, I think there's a line where it stops being a harsh yet enlightening review and one that just kind of crushes people without any other takeaway.
I understand that the overall quality was lower this year then other years, but we aren't helping to improve next year if we're turning away people at the door cause we're ok with being dicks and trashing things but not offering any idea of where they could start to improve or things they could work on. Our hobby is largely dominated by socially anxious, low self-esteem, shy weeby weirdos and its not asking much just to show a little tact from everyone in general.
I'm not going to lie, I've been apart of the problem in the past as well, and still feel terrible about some of the things I've said about some people's videos without consideration that there's a nerdy human being, just like me, who may have put their heart into that video. I'm not suggesting we all form a circle, hold hands, and only sing praises but it goes a long way to phrase things in a way that suggests there is room to improve rather then the implication that they wasted their time.
I wasn't personally offended by any of the reviews for the record, but do see room for improvement in general.
Both of these effectively summarize my stance. I too regret my attitude in the past. It's easy to overlook the human element and only see the video.VivifxAMV wrote:But yeah Tl; dr: You Can be politely R Rated, or a G rated asshole - its not really about content, more about how its presented.

Re: Obligatory, annual, elitist AWA 2016 Pro AMV review!
Okay, so I've been thinking about this all last night and this morning, and the more I think about it, the worse I feel. Straight-up, I was a dick with a lot of my reviews, and reading other people's responses (and then re-reading a bunch of what I wrote) made me realize that things like this:
This is a Professional contest and I feel like that should definitely go both ways, and that's something I totally neglected to actually follow through on in my reviews. I'm thoroughly embarrassed with myself and really, really sorry.
and this:VivifxAMV wrote:But don't bundle your pettiness in with some half-assed advice and call it "a review."
directly apply to many of the things I wrote. Everything I said in this post definitely applies, but it doesn't excuse the narcissistic douchiness that was prevalent in a lot of the things I said. So, truly, I'm really sorry to anyone who was offended by any of my negative feedback. I really want to make it up to you but I don't know who you are at this point in time. My offer still stands, although I wouldn't blame people for not wanting to take me up on it -- if anyone wants to send me a PM after the contest is over I will be more than happy to provide serious, detailed, constructive, and 100% non-dickfaced feedback on your video.Shin-AMV wrote:However, I think there's a line where it stops being a harsh yet enlightening review and one that just kind of crushes people without any other takeaway.

Well don't be too sorry.. people take harsh critique differently. No one is going to feel good about it on the receiving end but if you have a point to what you're saying, some people will actually try to change. There are some editors who wouldn't respond to a regular review because they're too use to doing whatever they do, they might actually need someone to roast them. For me, the Pro reviews from 2 years ago was what made me actually want to get better at editing, cause I would put my heart into something and no one could get past the "quality" or the "text" and it made me mad to where I wanted to get better.
Sometimes it takes a loud/rude wake up call to get the point across. I'm fine with the way these Pro reviews work and because it's just such a unique contest, go ahead and make any kind of review you want as long as you get your point across.
