Forum rules
Please observe the following unique rules for this forum:
  • Please limit your new threads (not replies) to one per week. If you have several new videos to announce, create one thread for all the videos. (Note: if you forget one you can edit your post!)
  • Offsite links are allowed, but you are required to have a catalog entry for that video as well. Threads announcing videos that do not contain a catalog entry will be moved to the Awaiting Catalog Entry sub-forum and will be deleted in 2 weeks if an entry is not created.
  • When posting announcements, it is recommended that you include links to the catalog entries (using the video ID) in your post.
  • Videos that do not contain anime are allowed to be announced in the Other Videos section and are not required to have catalog entries.

Okay, well. If you're asking for me to be blunt.

The first, most obvious thing about this video is the subtitles. It's basically kind of expected this day and age that you'd be able to make a video without using hardsubbed footage, but just so you know, it's never, ever, ever good to have subtitles unless they contribute to the concept of the video in some way. Otherwise, they're just distracting and ugly, as is the case here.

Second, and more pressing as far as I'm concerned, is that (and remember you wanted bluntness) there is basically no actual editing to be found in this video. What I mean is, this basically feels like a bunch of random fight scenes from the anime all strung together without you doing much work in the way of cutting and arranging them in any meaningful way. I'll just give you a simple example: from 2:08-2:14 the song transitions from a verse to the chorus, which entails a change in the intensity of the music...however, the footage doesn't change at all. It's just the same scene for this entire stretch. Normally when there's a major change in music, you as the editor should make some kind of cut or edit to the video to sync up with that change. That's, well, that's just basic editing. This is hugely lacking throughout the video. The visual rhythm of the anime hardly ever syncs up with the music (and when it does, it's probably completely unintentional). As far as I can tell, there's absolutely no reason for you to have chosen this song over any other.

One other nitpick is the presence of (admittedly minimal) lip flap throughout the video. Lip flap is where a character's mouth moves but it's not synced up to the words of the song (such as at 1:17-1:19). Generally this is to be avoided as it looks sloppy.

The only thing this video has going for it frankly has nothing to do with you, really; I feel like a good video could be made with this song and this anime, but a lot more work needs to go into it. You did choose pretty high-octane scenes throughout the video and the song is pretty heavy from beginning to end, so there were some occasional instances of incidental sync, but by and large there was just no connection with the footage and the music; the editing simply wasn't there.

Thanks! I shall work on this for my next video. I like when people are blunt because they get to the point better. If you don't mind would it be possible for me to PM you with my next attempt at an AMV?
