Re: AWA 2014 Rules The Video Art Track at Anime Weekend Atla
This is a sidebar, and does not apply to this year's events, but I wanted to open discussion early.
The judges of The Music Video exposition discussed the submission of "AMV Hell"-style entries. These are videos that are a sequence of largely unrelated small "punchlines" of ideas for videos... I'm sure you all know the type. Beginning next year, these videos will be given their own event in The Video Art Track, and will not be eligible for recognition in The Music Video Exposition and will not screen in our main ceremony.
The is the very first time The VAT has ever made a clear statement regarding the composition of an entry in any of our events, but we've never felt such compilations were particularly strong competition amongst more traditional submissions, and they've really never been seriously considered for recognition since the larger and more well known (Ponies: The Anthology, AMV Hell) have been given their own events in The VAT. This is not really a change for us, more of a rare insight into our judging process and we want to be upfront and clear about it.
Such videos remain more than welcome at Anime Weekend Atlanta and in The Video Art Track, indeed we will be setting aside an event just for them, and should any be so creative, unique, or particularly well executed to surprise us, some recognition will be conjured up on the spot for them as has always been our way. In addition I want to also point out that there has never been a lower time limit on videos in the Exposition, and if anyone wants to submit a short idea to the Expo on its own, it would remain welcome under this policy.
That's all... The main rules page will be updated to include the new event and reflect this after the convention.

Honestly? We thought it'd jumped the shark after Hell/0. Clearly we were wrong. It's very likely that'll be the name of the new event, though it will not function the same way as the old contest.CrackTheSky wrote:That reminds me...whatever happened to Short Attention Span Theater?jingoro wrote:In addition I want to also point out that there has never been a lower time limit on videos in the Exposition, and if anyone wants to submit a short idea to the Expo on its own, it would remain welcome under this policy.

I remember it doing well and then sort of losing momentum the next time. Although, it does seem like blipverts are on the upswing again.

Makes sense. I liked SAST the one year I was there for it, and it seemed to be a real crowd-pleaser. I'm not a fan of Hell-style videos but I thought SAST felt fresh and the contest approach allowed for some great stuff to come through.jingoro wrote:Honestly? Trust me, AMV Hell video do real good in the AMV room... Why Most of the Hell movies are always packed..
I've done Hell video Marathon's at AWA, Sakura-Con, Anime North, Tekkoshocon and a few other places... Usually late a night and in all places the room was packed regardless of the time of night or morning.. So honestly they fill rooms and so the creators can rest assured they will have a full audience watching them regardless.
