"Religious" doesn't mean just conservative Christians. It goes from Christianity to Buddhism to Islam to Wicca to Satanism to New Age pussiness to Raelianism to Scientology (which is an obvious scam) to Indian snake worship, etcetera. And all are different, all claim some great, delayed reward for following it, all claim to be a path to salvation, and that is why I choose to not follow any of it. Still interesting to think about, though.
From the article:
"The announcement was met with skepticism and concern, since other cloned mammals have had serious birth defects or developed health problems later. But in an interview with CNN, Rael dismissed concerns about health problems in cloned animals, saying "I have no doubt the child will be perfectly healthy."
"Everybody in the world now is crazy about what if the child has a problem. What if? I say, what if the child is perfectly healthy and beautiful? I think opponents to cloning are more afraid of that than of the faults," he said."
No, the problems are:
1. This guy is a loony cult leader, not a scientist.
2. It's less about the child's health, even, and more that were tampering with a human being using technology and science that we do not fully understand the ramifications and problems of.
3. We have not explored the social aspects of clones. Are they truly human? Should we register them? Can killing a clone be considered the same as killing the original human? What about the potential of creating hierarchies of clones, keeping the same leader in pretty much constant power?
4. And finally, regarding the child - considering that other cloned mammals have had problems, who is to say that humans, who are not that far removed from other creatures, will be exempt from these health problems? They think they have given birth to a messiah - have they really given birth to an invalid?
Anyhow, until some independent verification is given, I'll remain skeptical.
I'm out...
