Which Aspect of AMV making takes you the most time?

Post by y2kwizard » Fri Dec 27, 2002 12:08 am

Hey, all. I was sitting here at my computer putting together a music video (live action, not AMV), when I realized that, man, I've been working on this FOREVER, and I've only done 45 seconds!

The video is pretty much straightforward. Mostly straight cuts with a little transparency here and there. The video is also dependent on each cut being in perfect time with the music. I'm doing frequent reverse speed effects....but otehr than that, I'm not sure what's taking me so stinking long.

What takes you the longest, other than capturing source and encoding? Which part of the EDITING process? With AMVs, I'd guess it would be finding the perfect scene from hours of footage...what takes you the longes?

The tweaking and tightening of timing after I've laid down the basic framework of the video.
I have no idea how to use this new forum.

Simply making the damn thing. Some people set up base-line footage, then add effects, transitions, etc. I make them as I go, as the ideas come to me. My videos are pretty much exercises in spur-of-the-moment inspiration, since I usually go into it with a vague idea of what I want and I figure out the details as I go. Probably why I suck.

Debugging it near the end, it takes almost 50% of the time it takes to 'make' my vids. There's always at least one mistake that missed your checking, which you'll only find out after finished the final distribution encode.....

Re-animating footage. I have a 4-second sequence in my latest video that I've been working on for nearly two weeks.

nicely done.. the sad part is, many people won't know that you placed that teardrop there. :?

Anyways, to me, it's the planning. I usually sit and listen to the song over and over to make sure I've considered every possible beat and know the direction of where I'm headed before I even begin to layout anything. Unlike most people, I make sure that every single second/frame of the video is exactly the way I want it to be before I move on. I don't like skipping around because it feels like what I place in the gap would be just a filler.

I tweak things up, etc.

Once I get into editing with Cinelerra on Linux, I'll be doing a ton of more things like advanced motion and stuff.

you wanna know what takes the most time?
reanimating each and every daned frame, one at a time. THAT is what eats up 90% of the time for making an AMV.
