Limerence

Post by Emong » Sun Sep 30, 2012 5:21 am

My AWA Pro entry. It wasn't actually made for the con but a certain anonymous Fay-sa convinced me to send it :P Thanks for everyone who voted/watched/cared to spend some thought on it!

About the title: Limerence is a "cognitive and emotional state of being emotionally attached or even obsessed with another person, typically experienced involuntarily and characterized by a strong desire for reciprocation of one's feelings - a near-obsessive form of romantic love." This condition is characterized by strong intrusive fantasies (often followed by a crushing realization of reality) and is sustained by hope: "The base for limerent hope is not in objective reality but reality as it is perceived. The inclination is to sift through nuances of speech and subtleties of behavior for evidence of limerent hope [...] "Little things" are noticed and endlessly analyzed for meaning [...] The belief that the limerent object does not and will not reciprocate can only come about with great difficulty." (Wikipedia)

About the story: It doesn't follow the story of the anime. Probably not so many people got this at AWA (can I blame the lack of context instead of my story-telling abilities...? :uhoh: ) Anyhow, I'll just copy-paste from my video description: Instead of the usual story of "girl meets boy, girl takes forever to confess but finally does, girl then gets the boy" I made my own version: "Girl meets boy, girl develops a heavy crush on him, girl confesses but gets rejected, girl nonetheless keeps on fantasizing and can't let go". The amv is about 50% fantasy and 50% reality. The scenes are differentiated by presenting the fantasy/fantasmatic gazes with boosted saturation and brightness while the reality scenes are only half-saturated and darker. The changes are pretty subtle but I hope depicherable.

And that's it. Enjoy my gloom and
Spoiler :
sloppy transitions.

How nice of you to turn something so happy and cute like KnT into something so depressing and gloomy. XD Anyway I'm going to quote myself from before in the AWA thread cause I'm too lazy to rewrite it:
That was quite a refreshing KnT video. I love the sharp contrast between the oversaturated colouring and the much darker and cooler scenes. It’s like a contrast between fantasy being all colourful and reality being well…gloomy. Which I think, is exactly what you’re trying to show with Sawako taking even the smallest things and amplifying it into something more meaningful in her imagination, and then eventually she ends up projecting her fantasy into “reality” only to have it hurt in the end when she wakes up and realizes the cold hard truth. I like this concept. The editing was decent too, though I did think some of the zooms and the blurring was a bit much.
So to sum it up: I like the colouring touches and the scene selection. In particular the ones where Sawako blushes and realizes she was looking/staring at Kazehaya really shows that she's fantasizing. Also adding Kurumi was a great idea, especially the section where she's trying to summon the courage to give him chocolates but fails to leading to the imaginary scene in the classroom afterwards where Kazehaya clearly chose her over Kurumi. (Of course, in this case it's not real) The colour change and zoom at 3:24 was one of my favourite sections. Only thing I wasn't fond of was the excessive blurring, it's just too strong in some areas. But otherwise fantastic, I loved the video. <3

And gosh I thought my Tales credits were long but this is even longer! Ah well, at least it's nicely done and has a purpose in emphasizing your depressing story. :P

x2 :D

...to which I'll add that there was an incredible number of static scenes in this AMV, very little internal sync, and after a short while seeing the same expression over and over again on the characters' faces made me want something more out of the video. Not much really changed, in this regard, there are a lot of scenes that could be picked up from anywhere in the AMV and put down somewhere else without really changing anything about it, which to me makes it feel like the story itself was not very strong. It was a single, constant theme repeated over and over (hello, anime) and as such it felt overly drawn out. What was impactful and dramatic one minute it was not nearly as so after three or four minutes.

So many pretty transitions! Obviously a lot of work in this one, and I liked the style of it. I think its main problem is the lack of dramatic substance - which is mostly the anime's fault, really. I think you could've focused it down to a much shorter video, all things considered. But like I said, can't fault you for style here.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

This was very nice, it showed great affections of love. :D. Very wonderful, I enjoyed every bit of it and the end was pretty long but beautiful.

Thanks! Destroying Sawako's fantasies made me feel like such a bitch but Kimi ni Todoke was asking for it 8-)

Thanks for your comments! I probably should have sent you my beta before I had basically finished the whole thing. You made some really nice points there, which made me look at my amv differently. Damn you. I wasn't thinking about internal sync at all when I edited this (although I'm sure there would have been nice chances for it no matter how static the animation is). I also didn't think much about the repetitive use of facial expressions. I don't find anything wrong about repetition as such but afterwards when I thought about what I could have added to this video I had some ideas which might have worked nicely. All the more ironic since I remember telling you before to avoid doing an endless series of dramatic faces :P

Thanks. While editing I actually thought I should tone down the drama since the outro turned out to be overly melodramatic. Maybe I had already turned blind to the downplayed drama of the series? :P

I liked it very much. It's very simple and there's a whole lot of static scenes that might need some drama, but to me it worked. I like it when I have enough time to look at the particular scenes and see what meaning it has and what's the exact story, especially when it's a romance. Your colouring was also fitting to the general mood oh which speaking - was awesome. The blurred crossfades sometimes felt overdone though, especially at the beginning. Still, even though the music is totally not my cup of tea, I really enjoyed the video as a whole. Great job!

Very pretty and well edited. Unfortunately, it does kind of tend to fall prey to the drama/romance AMV trope of 'shots of peoples' faces as they stare at stuff', and the 2 minute end credits seemed...excessive. I did like your concept and style of execution though. 3/5

"Damn Me" I don't remember a dramatic faces warning, though... maybe angsty faces?

Anonymous Fay-Sa huh XD

You know I love this. I guess I just like real depressing stuff. I think I mention before in chat that the reason I like this is while this is edited like a romance video it tells the story of the rejection and how one can't accept it instead of the usual 'happy ending' and to me seems more realistic. That and I love the song. Also I'm not really bugged by the zooms and stuff, I just enjoy the video for what it is and it my favorite of yours. Oh and someone give the girl a hug and some Prozac.
