MMV - The Great Dictator

Post by gabisrot » Sat Dec 10, 2011 8:17 pm

Its not an AMV strictly saying, since I only used manga pages and the "music" is in fact the final Speech from Charlie Chaplin's 'The Great Dictator'.
Don't even know if I can put this here, since I saw other MMVs i thought it was ok, sorry if it's not.
Hope you liked it.

Hmm....it's not really my type of video but that was sure interesting!

Only a few things bothered me:
1. The format. I understand you're using manga and the drawings are in different shapes and panel sizes but it's really quite annoying when you get a nice fullscreen picture and then a thin tall one. And since you were using multi-manga, it would have probably been better had you spent more effort looking up another picture that conveyed the same meaning but in better format.
2. Quality of the scans. Some of them looked relatively nice but some looked pretty bad. For a video that focuses on the powerful words in the speech, you do not want other random unnecessary text from the manga page lurking about. Not only is it distracting, it also shows you didn't take the time to clean them up properly.
3. Selection of the scans. For the most part it was done pretty well but the occasional one required you to be a reader of the series to understand what you were trying to show. The first example I can think of right now was the Bleach one with Rukia and Ichigo.
Spoiler :
If I never read the manga, I could have interpretated that as "omg an evil bitch just stabbed him while smiling!" instead of the power she was giving to him in kindness which was what you were trying to show.
4. Random colour scenes. One at the beginning and one near the end. Just don't understand why...if you had used the black and white and the colour pages as contrast then it might have worked more effectively.

But hey I did watch till the end. I think it could have been brilliant if it weren't for the above points, despite saying that I do honestly think it's not a bad video. Better try next time.

Thank you very much for commenting.
I'm kinda new in making this videos, yout tips wil be of great help for me.
Item 1 and 4 I kinda agree, nothing I can say, just sloppy work really, will try to make bether next time.
But about item 2, I dont like so much to clean the text from the pages, cause I think the pages become really artificial with empty balloons text. Do you really think it would be fundamental to remove all the texts?
And about item 3, I really think its better that way, maybe who dont understand all the context will be confuse, but the impact on who does understand will be way better.

Anyway, again I would like to thank for your constructive criticism.
I hope to bring something better next time :)

i guess it depends on your target audience, but having it where you need to know the manga to get the line excludes some of your potential audience while having it fit with pure visuals would encompass everybody and make for a more epic video feel like you would hope to aim for with an audio source like this.

yeah, cleaning the text from the page is a pretty big deal i think. It's like subtitles on an amv, it distracts from the song (or speech in this case) and makes it feel cheaper. Ideally you would have wanted to use just pictures without speech bubbles period, but that's not always easy so the least you could do is take words out that don't apply to the audio.

so i guess point 3 is your creative decision (i strongly suggest listening to her though) but point 2 is pretty objective. take em out.
