Holograms have arrived

Post by Glitzer » Tue Oct 11, 2011 6:36 pm

A few months ago, the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology released a video containing their new fVisiOn (floating 3-D Vision on the table) technology.

I accidentally stumbled upon the video while searching for how those durned Miku concerts work. This seems way more holographic than the current Miku concerts, as in those she is projected on a fine mesh screen. I wonder if they'll eventually use this technology in place of their current one for her projection.

I just thought it was something interesting that I should share. Maybe someone can tell me how it even works. I thought light had to be reflected off objects. Is the light just reflecting off the other light from the projectors? How do they get the light to even stop?

IDK, but my mind has been sufficiently blown.

Of course they need to make the projected image more clear and improve the viewing angle, but it's still pretty freaking sweet. I was hoping the whole time someone was going to poke it to see what happens.

Next stop, holodecks |:>

Haven't we had this technology since the 80s? I remember playing holographic arcade games as a kid. That looks just like it.

I was deprived as a child.

I did some checking, and I believe the technology you are referring to is very different from the methods of fVisiOn. One of the games you may be thinking of is Time Traveler, the "World's First Holographic Video Game". According to wiki, "the holographic effect is an optical illusion using a huge curved mirror and a CRT television set."

I believe fVisiOn is much more "holographic" in the sense that it has a 360° viewing angle achieved by micro-projectors from beneath the table, while the holographic games of the early 90's have a limited viewing angle (only can see from the front) and are realized through a curved mirror and CRT monitor.

You know much more about these holographic games than me, however. It was very interesting that you brought them up, as I have never heard of them until today.

All this stuff is just so amazing.

HoloAMV's?

There's a cone-shaped projection screen in the bottom of the table. Underneath the table, there's a ring of small projectors that project upward onto this screen. Each projector projects an object at a different angle.

As for how that results in stereoscopy, my understanding is that it's a similar principle to holography, but I do not know enough about optics to describe it further. This Wikipedia article might help.

I remember seeing a game like that, it was a fighting game similar to Streets of Rage. I guess the difference between this and that, is the perspective, were as you can only see one point of view of the image in those older holographic games, this new thing gives you an image that has a full 360 view of the projection.

It'd be awesome to have the set up to make larger images and scare the shit out of neighbors for Halloween :awesome:
