[AWA Masters] What the Hell

Post by l33tmeatwad » Mon Oct 03, 2011 9:49 am

This was my entry for the Anime Weekend Atlanta 2011 Masters' Contest. Unfortunately it was one of three videos that got cut from being shown at the Awards Ceremony due to time. I put more work into making and tweaking this video than I have on any other video I have edited. This is my second character profile style AMV that really aims to use a song that matches the character from the series and present them together. After hours of recreating fonts, erasing text out of scenes and replacing that text, this is the final result. My goal was to mesh the effects into the video in a way in which it would sync up with that of the original show. Hope you all enjoy!

I thought the new text was blended in with the original pretty well. There was a lot of good scene selection and the only knock against it I think would be sometimes it would feel a little slow. I laughed super hard and thoroughly enjoyed the internal sync at 2:40ish with the cat walking up the pole.

Wow.

I'm sorry, but that was incredibly boring. I haven't seen Panty & Stocking but from watching AMVs like DANGER DAYS: The True Lives of the Fabulous Panty & Stocking I saw what a livewire show it really is.
I mean, when the scene at 2:46 came up...and then it just kept going...and going...I had to stop watching.

Not even the text is that much of a feat :/ Due to the animation style of the show, it's relatively easy to match the font/colors and no real blending is needed.

Horribly slow pacing, boring lip sync, poorly executed concept, just...no man :/
If you want to do a true character profile of a female who is sexy, dirty and lives a fast life, then the video needs to be just like her. Sexy, dirty and fast. Not slow reaction shots randomly jumbled up to match a lyric here or there.

Thanks, that pole part was one of my favorite parts of the video as well :asd:

I enjoyed it from the perspective that I'm a PSWG fan, but editing-wise it needed a little work. Overall, it just seemed too slow for the song you chose. I also thought the lip sync was well done, but it was not necessary and just placeholding the thing together [at least from my perspective].

But the text was ridiculously well done, and I can tell the amount of work you put into the masking.

I agree that the pace of this video was a little too slow at some parts, but I still enjoyed it and feel that was nicely edited. And your scene selection combined with the text effects really added a nice touch  . I just think that a little less lip sync and a little more beat sync would have been a awesome improvement.

Thanks for the feedback. I was talking to a few other editors today and it dawned on me that the main breakdown I had with this video was my approach. Instead of approaching this with the song being ABOUT Panty, I kinda went at it with the angle of Panty singing the song. I think the mindset from "Shinji does (not) Mean Business" carried over into this video, as I produced the rough cut for both around the same time period. I also think the original MV influenced my approach as well. I will try to avoid this in the future for songs that are a bit more upbeat, lol...with that said, I still like the final outcome of this video.

I think that's the problem I had with it. While it had a funny song, funny scenes and a funny idea. The execution just wasn't up to par. The editing itself is good - like the masking and the text but the pacing felt extremely slow to me. It made a fun upbeat song go at the same pace as a sad sentimental song so everything just fell apart and made the video very boring. Also the lip sync just didn't appeal to me, I can't say it wasn't lip sync but at the same time it doesn't feel like lipsync? To be honest, I think you should consider remastering this but take a different approach on it. More fast scene cuts to help pick up the pacing and more lyrical sync to match the comedy parts of the song and it could be really awesome.

That being said, it did make me laugh at parts. Better luck next time! ;)

Meh, I'll let someone else have a crack at it if they so desire in the future, not really worth my time to remake a video when I have better videos that I want to finish (despite having fun working on this video and the footage itself). If I were to go back to remaster or redo any videos this would be at the bottom of the list, most of my older videos had no one quality checking them and leaving feedback, so I would prefer to remaster those first. While it is not a popular approach due to it being very "counter grain" in comparison to how AMVs are typically done, I'm fairly happy with the result myself. That said, the reception for this video has been either really good or really bad, there hasn't been much middle ground. I think the main thing is that I produced something that is the opposite of what everyone wants and expects. For now, another song, another video, moving along from here, not gonna pull a George Lucas and tweak it for 30 years :asd: ...
