[Visual Effects]
1. Effects which serve no purpose other than to make up for boring footage/editing.
2. Grunge/old-film look which serves no purpose other than to make up for low-quality footage/editing.
3. Bad font choices.
4. Camera shake that makes me want to scream "For the love of all that is good, HOLD STILL!"
5. Masking for no purpose other than to point out that there is masking. Usually this also is executed poorly, which only increases the level of offense.
[Style / Genre]
1. Action videos which are all sync and no substance.
2. Drama videos which use a bunch of a series' high-impact scenes...but don't bother to educate the uninformed viewer about what makes those scenes high-impact in the first place.
3. Dance videos which hover so close to the "action" video line that the only difference is really how bright the color palette is.
4. Single/dual-editor AMV Hell-type videos which go on waaaayyy too long.
5. Comedy videos which utterly fail to be amusing because they rely on funny audio as their sole source of comedic relief (a.k.a many Weird Al AMVs) and totally drop the ball in all other respects.
[Anime / Visual Source]
1. Bad AR, particularly and most egregiously in AMVs being shown in competition.
2. Subtitles. No, just...put down that fansub and back away slowly!
3. Over-filtering of footage such that it no longer resembles the original footage, most often seen with color/saturation/brightness adjustments.
4. Using multiple sources with different visual quality in one video.
5. Unfortunate evidence of footage being slowed down or sped up. This includes 60 FPS videos which would have probably been just fine at 24 FPS or something.
[Additional Grievances]
1. Over-reliance on the popular song-of-the-day/week/month.
2. Karaoke.
3. AMVs set to foreign-language songs which the editor a) clearly doesn't know the meaning of and/or b) can't communicate the meaning of.
4. Lots of visual activity during pauses or dramatic silences in a song.
5. Fan-videos. The type which are titled Inuyasha_X_Kagome and exist for no other reason than to literally show someone's favorite scenes of specific characters doing random stuff.
I have to say, reading everyone's lists, I am getting quite an education about particular likes/dislikes I never really thought about before (or, if I did, didn't realize some folks might feel so strongly).
