I'm sorry, but... how do you put up with that D:Qyot27 wrote:12) Our computers tend to be very long-lived. We have an NEC my parents bought in 1995 that still works, the computer I use as my main setup (yes, this includes editing, when I find the motivation) will be 10 years old come August, and the one in the living room that my sisters use is from 2003. The NEC hasn't been upgraded any (to my knowledge), but mine has been modified extensively*. The only stuff done to the one in the living room is a replacement ethernet card and some DDR SDRAM I bought for mine, only to find out that my setup uses non-DDR SDRAM.
*RAM doubled from 256MB to 512MB, one DVD-ROM drive I took out of a crappy Compaq we only had for two years, replaced that DVD-ROM with a DVD-RW a couple of years after that (but the -ROM drive does still work), swapped the original 30GB 5400rpm HDD out for a 160GB 7200rpm drive, a PCI card to give me USB 2.0 ports, a GeForce 6200 graphics card for PCI, and it's now on its third PSU. The first one went in September 2005, the second one went in June 2010. I'm also [effectively] on my third monitor, as the CRT it came with has problems with its reds (thereby sporadically turning everything green-tinted), and the second CRT has something wrong with its focus. So now I'm on a little LCD that's restricted to a maximum of 1024x768.

Re: 10 Random things meme
1) Although I'm 38 years old, I've only been a serious anime fan for about the last 6 years.
2) Apart from anime and AMVs, my main hobby is historical fencing. Rapier, longsword, sidesword and buckler, that kind of thing. I made my own leather armor. I'm not part of the SCA.
3) I smoke the same brand of cigarettes as Brad, but I only go through one pack per week. I'm not nicotine-dependent, it's more of a Freudian oral gratification thing. The only time I can't not smoke is while editing.
4) I moved to Canada from England in August 2000, for no particular reason.
5) I love beer. I like almost all alcoholic drinks, but beer is my favorite. I have tried almost every beer that BC Liquor Stores has in stock.
6) I am married to Corpsegoddess. It is my second marriage. We are both friends with my ex.
7) If there's an task that I perform regularly, I take great pains to figure out the most efficient way to do it.
8) AMVs are the only "artistic" thing I do. I can't draw or paint or write poetry or prose or sing or compose music. I used to play bass guitar in a metal band, but that doesn't really count.
9) I suspect I may have Aspergers. I tend to err on the side of caution when communicating with others, to make sure I don't blurt out something inappropriate. I didn't used to do this. I didn't used to have many friends.
10) I self-identified as a goth throughout my 20's. I'm a little old to be wearing eyeliner, but my clothes are still almost all black, and I still tend to like morbid or spooky stuff, especially music and movies. My apartment is always decorated for Halloween.

Re: 10 Random things meme
Here's 10 more things!
1) My biggest desire is to live in Sedona, Arizona, where I fell in LOVE with the landscape and weather.
2) My entire family lives within an hour drive. This includes extended relatives and my entire tree. Although we have an obscene number of friends in different states.
3) I'm a freelance webmaster/designer. I actually make some really nice money off of that. I'm also a part time accountant at a CPA firm, where I do all the IT stuff in the guise of a poorly paid intern. ;____;
4) I have a collection of pins from every state I've ever been to. My goal is to get all the states by the time I die, and hopefully several international places.
5) While I love anime, JRPGs and manga, I honestly don't obsess over the Japanese culture. O-o
6) I've never been naturally intelligent. I've always made good grades, but it requires effort and a lot of studying. But once I really remember something, I generally never forget it.
7) I obsess over old TV. Modern sitcoms can kiss my ass. I'll take "I Love Lucy", the "Beverly Hillbillies" or "Roseanne" any day of the week. Thank God for TVland and Nick at Night. [Although a few 90's shows are very good like "The Nanny"]
8) I LOVE water. In the summer, I'm out in my pool almost every stinkin' day that it's not raining.
9) I've bought every version of Final Fantasy IV. PSP, GBA, DS, PS1, SNES, Online.... And yes, I'm one of those freaks that actually buy them just for updated graphics and new dungeons/events. And if FFVI ever does it, you bet your ass I'll be snagging it too.
10) I went white water rafting and didn't get a bit wet during the entire trip, but when getting out of the boat and to get onto the dock, I tripped and fell into the water and got soaked head to toe. >_<
11) My great-grandmother is ridiculously racist towards African Americans. My step-grandfather hates "dem Mexicans". My great grandmother's daughter married an African American and my step-grandfather's daughter married an immigrant from Mexico. Thanksgiving at my house is a riot. XD
12) I went to New Orleans and about died from the heat. I literally thought I was going to die, because I passed out after being out in the sun for the entirety of the day. When I came back to Arkansas [which also has hot summers], I about kissed the cooler air in an inappropriate manner.
13) After watching "The Day After Tomorrow", I never want to EVER visit NYC. >_<
14) I was never scared of needles until the day when the blood tester miss-hit and drained WAY too much blood, made me pass-out and now I cannot even glance at one without getting ridiculously never. Which is bad, because I take a weekly injection for my arthritis medication.

Re: 10 Random things meme
Lots, and lots, of patience. And making sure I've got other things to do to pass the time when a process is taking a long time. I have the resolve to use something until it absolutely breaks. I didn't mention the processor, though - a 1GHz Celeron with a Coppermine core. Yes, the Celeron-ized version of the Pentium III. I've actually toyed a little with the idea of swapping it out with a 1.2 GHz PIII Tualatin, but that'd probably only happen if the CPU actually dies. And when that happens, it might end up taking the motherboard with it, so... But you have to admit, it's a Celeron, an older Celeron, it's been driven hard for the better 3/4ths of a decade, and it still hasn't keeled. I'm starting to think 'luck' just can't describe that properly.Jadecavy wrote:I'm sorry, but... how do you put up with that D:
I really have sort of stopped editing on here because I'd just about had it with the render times. And that was before putting the extra RAM and graphics card in. Chances are my editing is on a hiatus until I can build a new computer to my desired specs...and then run that setup for 10-15 years.
But it's perfectly fine for browsing the Internet, listening to music, watching videos (within a certain range I've learned the boundaries of*), playing [most] Touhou games, and other scattered tasks that don't really take up many resources.
*read: I have to convert nearly everything I want to watch to either DVD-compliant MPEG-2, or SD (or below) Xvid. Considering most AMVs, trailers, etc., that come through this setup do end up on DVD-Rs anyway, the MPEG-2 option is usually the go-to.
Now that is poetic justice.CodeZTM wrote:11) My great-grandmother is ridiculously racist towards African Americans. My step-grandfather hates "dem Mexicans". Re: 10 Random things meme
What the hey, I'll throw mine in here:
1) I love tech. I currently have 5 laptops (4 are operational, 1 I don't know about), 3 computers I can have on in under 5 minutes, and another 4 that would take longer, and a ton of smaller things like external HDs, game consoles, DVD/BD players, etc.
2) I absolutely hate being rained, snowed, sleeted, hailed, or any other form of sky-watered on. I don't mind seeing it when I'm inside a building or other shelter, but I seriously dislike being out in it.
3) I've been under a general anesthetic three times in my life, and a local two other times. I had my adenoids removed and ear tubes inserted at different times when I was very young (1st/2nd grade), and had my wisdom teeth removed under general. I had a baby tooth pulled under a local, and interestingly, my heart surgery was also done under a local.
4) Speaking of my heart surgery, in March of 2007 I was diagnosed with a cardiac arrhythmia, specifically RVOT PVCs on about 28% of my heart's beats. I underwent radiofrequency catheter ablation that August, which reduced the number of PVCs from about 30,000 per day to 1 in a 24-hour period. Even the doctor was surprised at how well the surgery worked. I'm supposed to get checked for a reoccurrence every year, but I've been stupid and haven't for the last two. After the news about godix, I plan to see my cardiologist early next month.
5) Politically, I lean pretty heavily left on social issues, a little less so on financial ones. I think the biggest issue in the US system right now is all the corporate money in the elections. I'd like to see either a complete ban on corporate financing, or completely public financing of elections, with a severely restricted campaign season (9 months for President, 6 months for Senator/Rep/state-level office). People are spending so much time campaigning or setting up for their next campaign that they don't have time to actually do the work.
6) Religiously, I was raised Roman Catholic, but probably the best term I've come up with to describe my current belief system is "Agnostic Deist." Probably my prime tenet is "my relationship with God/the gods/what have you is my business and not yours, your relationship is your business and not mine." As long as you practicing your religion isn't impacting other people's rights to not practice it, I don't really care about it.
7) My eating habits are exactly that, habits. I tend to find a few things I really like to eat, and not deviate from those much. I eat a lot of Subway, since it's really close to where I work, and it's the best tradeoff of distance to quality and quickness of food around here. I almost always get one particular (kind of oddball) sub. Every clerk who's worked there for the past two years knows what it is and will ask if I want my usual, and I'll usually get a comment if I decide to get something different that day. I did the same thing when I was in undergrad at a different Subway near campus.
8) I love seeing theatre plays, especially musicals. I've seen at least twelve productions in the last few years, and have a membership at my local theater just for access to early tickets. I'd commit grievous bodily harm to see a professional production of Les Misérables, which I've heard the score to countless times, but never seen the actual show.
9) I've owned 7 iPods since 2004, but only paid for two. The rest were replacements through Best Buy's protection plan. The first one was an HP-branded 40GB 4G that I dropped on a DDR arcade machine a month out of warranty, so I replaced it with a 30GB 5G (and got a 3-year plan on that one). That one's battery stopped holding a charge after two years, which led to a string of refurbished replacements that were bad, two with hard drive issues, one with a click wheel issue. Since that was three Rapid Replacements, they gave me a new one after that, a 120GB 6G, since that was the closest in price to what mine had cost, and got a 2-year plan on that one. I fell with that one in my pocket about six months later, and the replacement for that is what's been riding in my pocket ever since. I'm debating buying an iTouch, but can't justify the price to myself yet.
10) I dislike talking on the phone and despise answering machines with a particular passion. I always sound like an absolute idiot when I leave a message for someone.

Re: 10 Random things meme
Facts? ok:
1) Even when I was a child, my family was already involved with anime. Never got interested in it until I was 12 years old though. Reason: Even I don't know
2) Meaning that when I was 12 years old I watched my first anime: Saint Seiya. That was in 2002, same year I started editing amvs, though I didn't know those things were amvs, I just simply used to mix the music with the episodes
3) Differently from other countries, anime in my country is restricted since 2009. There-s no way you can get DVDs. There's one anime shop though but no DVDs
Special thanks to an activist group that promote the restriction, with the excuse that anime promotes violence in the youth
4) I'm a member of the Red Cross, In a summer day in 1998 I was saved by those guys. Now I'm returning the favor
5) I'm not your kind of guy that likes to party too much, THOUGH all parties I decide to go I always do "something", like dancing in a psychodelic way xDD
6) Compared to other otakus, I'm not obsessed with doing cosplay. I think my edition is all I need during anime fests
7) Also not obsessed with collecting toys or mangas. I dunno, just not my cup of tea
8) Even when I'm a medical student, I also study a lot about design. Too weird considering that design students should be the ones making amvs, not me :O
9) About the otaku culture here, compared to USA or Europe, otakus here seems to not enjoy it the anime fests as they should. In my case I always clap for excellent cosplays even when I don't like it
10) Thanks to a disease I had in the past, I can't smoke. Seriously. Smoking means Death for me considering that just smelling it makes me have sudden changes, like coughing without stop, or headache. I almost fell one day
11) About food I love Pizza xD the Pizza here is more delicious than in USA FTW!!! I have tried the one from USA but it's not enough compared to the one made here
12) In my country there's one extra kind of Pizza. It's called the Honduran Pizza, better known as the Baleada. But instead of tomatoes, it has beans, so basically it includes cheese, beans, eggs and many other ingredients (avocado, pork, chicken meat)
13) What about drinking? During a mission with RC, I was offered to have a hot beer. You might imagine the flavor (guys who have drunk). Since I was so much thirsty I didn't think it twice. I inmediately drank it directly and then I don't remember what happened. I just woke up in the ambulance
14) I'm in charge of a hospital here. It's hard having the kind of boss that frequently reduces my vacation time thanks to the big amount of patients that comes here
15) Movies I have enjoyed are the Day after Tomorrow, Luther and Armagedon. Don't watch too much thanks to my job
16) After amvs, I love swimming. I used to be a lifeguard until last year
17) Before studying medicine I used to follow psychology. Even when I didn't choose psycho, I support the career
18) Reason why I'm in medicine (and not in design or psychology), is that I love ACTION. I consider design and psychology too quiet enough for satisfying my needs of adrenaline. In that way I'm more like Zaraki Kenpachi for example xDDD
19) About amvs, I'm also active in Akross. Actually in Akross is where I learned to edit properly thanks to big guys like S.A. Robert, brdm-69, Hlebalolomator, El-Tjan, and others
20) In the edition of amvs, I have one phylosophy: If I start editing something I already know how many time I have, how I am going to edit, what sources I need and what's the concept inside it. If I don't define any of those points then it's better for me to do anything else, but no editing amvs, cause I'm simply going to fuck it off. JUST to remind me that

Re: 10 Random things meme
This came as a complete shocker to me. Most editors that you and I know usually tend to act like "hot shit" in jest and we easily see right through each other.Brad wrote: his first impression of me was that I was full of myself and thought I was hot shit. He later understood more about who I was, but when André told me that, I genuinely felt like a complete asshole. Even though I wasn't trying to act like that, the fact that I was perceived that way really upset me. So, if I ever come off that way, please know that I'm either being totally sarcastic, or I'm talking about something factual (like in the previous case, I was talking about raw experience, not like, innate talent or something)... Okay that was really long.

This thread is great. I feel like I'm really getting to know you all better.

Re: 10 Random things meme
Why sure, I'll play again. ;p
* I've never understood the point of dating while in Jr.High/High school. It always came off as a waste of time to me as chances of meeting 'the one' at that age are pretty slim, and there are lots and lots of break ups. So I never really bothered with the whole dating thing. Now that I'm older, I'm kinda interested in trying out a relationship, but at the same time I kinda see myself as the kind of guy who happily stays single.
* Random people seem to like to talk to me. At school, at the store, where-the-heck ever, people I don't even know decide to come over and just talk for a whole out of nowhere. They seem to enjoy themselves, which is weird because I generally don't do much besides reply with polite 'uh-huh's and 'yeah's. I still remember when I was about 13, some woman decided to unload her life's story on me for a good half hour. I was just minding my own business, playing Pokemon Sapphire...
* I love cloudy, rainy, dreary weather, probably because I live in a desert. Lots of people around me get tired of that kind of weather somewhat quickly, but I'm always sad when it leaves. The only exceptions are when I go to the beach or waterparks, since 90% of the time when I go, it's cloudy and I end up looking like a pathetic wet kitten.
* I'll tend to obsess over new songs a lot. Having killed the majority of my library, if I find a new song I like, I'll end up primarily listening to it for a week or two until I kill that too.
* The first few anime I remember seeing were My Neighbor Totoro, Dragonball Z and Akira of all things. I got introduced to them all by my dad, but I honestly can't remember if I got to watch the whole of Akira when I was that young, or just certain parts. I wasn't really allowed to watch anything violent at that age, but I do remember seeing some of the weirder scenes and just thinking 'whaaa'. So I have no idea.
* I think Im the only person I know who liked the 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' movie [With Johnny Depp] waay better than the older 'Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory'. Closer to the book, and Charlie is less of a whiner.
* I've never been interested in drinking or smoking. I'm certainly going to try some alky-hol when I turn 21, but I can't imaging that I'll like it that much. I hate smoke weather it's coming from a cigarette or a bbq, so there's no reason for me to want to try that.
* I'm a Christian. The church I go to calls itself Presbyterian, but I don't think it sticks that closely with it's namesake. To be honest, I'm not super clear on the different types of Christianity. I'm Christian, thats all I need to know.
* I don't mind talking on the phone, but I hate the idea of video chat, it just seems incredibly awkward to have to sit there and stare at the other person on a screen while you talk. I'm fine with jumping in on someone else's video chat for a second, but I don't want to be obligated to just sit there?
* I was totally interviewed for 'Platypus Day' [A promotion for Phineas and Ferb] at Disneyland a couple months ago, and my mom saw me on one of the commercials for it making the Perry noise XD She pretty much recorded the whole P&F marathon in case I was on again, which I was, but I still have yet to see it myself.

I was the same way. I had only one relationship while I was still in school and it was bad enough that I realized I had way better things to do with my time and energy then.Hagaren Viper wrote:* I've never understood the point of dating while in Jr.High/High school. I have a bad habit of doing the same thing, especially if I have a video idea to it. Problem is I'll burn myself out on the song before I ever finish the video and I won't want to do it anymore XDHagaren Viper wrote:* I'll tend to obsess over new songs a lot.
