Why do some editors wait for a con deadline before they edit

Post by Castor Troy » Mon Nov 08, 2010 3:07 pm

In doing my part to encourage more discussion on the .org, here's something I've wanted to address for a long time.

I've talked to several editors before about this and some were pissed off that they missed a contest deadline because "the submission deadline was announced too late".

what?

Why do some editors wait until the announcement of a con deadline before they start editing? I know several editors who actually work like this and I don't understand why they wait and then complain they "can't finish/had to rush" their video because the con deadline is only a week long.

Why not start at the beginning of the year, get it done, then you'll have a video to submit to every con as the deadlines start popping up. I've literally even had the counter-argument that some editors like to wait because holding off on a video for so long will drive them NUTS. Oh noes. :ying:

Maybe some editors like to work under more pressure? Why not work hard now and play World of Warcraft later? Seriously, it's a no brainer.

Discuss. :dino:

Probably because it gives them a drive to edit? or something like that.

I don't wait for deadline announcements, but I do edit with the deadlines in mind, since I work better if I have a target date for completion. "It needs to be done by THIS DATE, no excuses."

But I think waiting for the official deadline announcement before editing is kind of stupid, since we know generally when the deadlines will be already. For most cons, about a month before the actual con, AWA Pro in late July, AWA Expo in mid-August, Otakon in late June, and so on. The general time period is known, only the specific date is up in the air until the announcement.

I start editing toward the general deadlines, and get more focused once the official dates are announced.

This entire topic is alien to me. I edit video when I feel inspired to. I've never made a video because of a con deadline, quite the opposite: I finish a video and then decide if I want to enter it into a contest.

Everyone has their work ethic, and I'm sure a lot of people function better when they have a gun to their head. Not me. I can't iron chef for shit

Pretty much this. I can't understand why the exact day would matter. You know when the con is (or can check animecons.com if you need to) and you can extrapolate back from there. The argument doesn't make any sense at all.

Unless, of course, it's not about the date but, rather, about a possible rules change.
