Anime Expo 2010 Anime Music Video Contest Rules Up

What can I say? We got suckered. We're not encyclopedias of every anime show out there. I know that my personal reaction was, "Wow, this is really well done. This is truly Pro material!" I was completely suckered, as were the other ten or so judges on the panel. If we had known, it would've been DQed not 30 seconds into the vid's judging.

I don't know if this was sent in as a purposeful troll or if it was simply an epic failure in the entrant's understanding of the definition of "Pro," but obviously it has succeeded in making fools out of us and our event, and we will need to rethink how to better scrutinize "Pro" vids in the future.

I hope to hell that Michael will consider DQ'ing the vid.

Here are my two cents.
As for judging 'ALL' videos in the future, if you guys give high marks 'for effects' or even good cutting. ALWAYS try to question the ability of the editor (don't give them the benefit of the doubt, even in the Pro category). When i look at someones' AMV i always try pick apart 'how he did it'. If i can't instantly figure out, how he made the effect i assume it is part of stock footage and that no work went into it. Professionally edited footage usually is a lot cleaner.

A rule of thumb is: if it looks too good, its probably not real. :\
*of course there are exceptions to the case.

A good example would be Dean's Macross Frontier video last year that made it into AMTvPro. It was a great video and i spent at least 2 hours with him on AIM going over the entire thing, talking with him and asking him what parts were 'stock footage' and what parts he actually added effects. To my discovery as he told me, some parts i thought were done in AE, turned out to be stock footage.
And recently I finished watching Macross Frontier, and low and behold, yup it was stock footage indeed.
Though not to discredit Dean though, most of it was still done in AE and very impressive.

In what way? It's already an embarrassment to us so it wouldn't matter there. It'd be a bit of an embarrassment to the editor though. It isn't known if the 'editor' entered this video innocently or less-than-innocently.

It could be done quietly with just a quick substitution in the list and a blurb about it here. No need for a big announcement or whatnot. A majority of the people who actively pay attention are mostly in here anyway.

That's precisely what I do, actually. I looked at that vid and I went, "Yeah, that looks do-able in After Effects." Quite a bit of that isn't that complicated if you know the program well enough.

Cuts and effects like what was shown in that video are PRECISELY what was envisioned for the Pro category. No radar bells went off because that's what we expect to see. We want to see effects, pristine source, effects, smooth and well timed cuts, effects, and simply something cool. Oh, and effects.

For example: Each year before AMTV's judging begins, Nostromo's Magic Pad is frequently cited as an example of a perfect '10' in that category. A vid relying on just straight cuts in this category better be impossibly clever or it'll have a rough time in the judging.

In truth, quite a few vids that were entered into AMTV are very very good and enjoyable videos that would beat some ass in other categories, but fell a little short of what we had in mind for the category (read: no effects). Some even made it in anyway, but it's clear that some rejiggering of the category itself is necessary, in my opinion.

Man, this guy manages to get in AGAIN? I remember the Zetsubou Sensei issue last year but the fact that he gets in again with the same shennaigans is an emberassment. I don't think he's "Trolling" in the typical sense of the word. I've seen way too many bad youtube amvs to think that. But that's exactly what this is, a bad youtube amv with absolutely no effort in it.

I know the results have been releasedd and all but I'm sorry, this does need to be disqualified as it is an insult all around. I understand that it got by you guys as it requires knowledge of certain things ahead of time (i.e. the persona openings) but don't think this will get by anybody that has actually played the game - anyone in the audience who has played persona (or if they're anything like me, just likes looking up opening sequences on youtube for stuff) will notice and will likely inform others.

Oh and somebody should crosscheck Duvet, I can recognize the PErsona 4 opening since I've watched it and played it - but now since this guyu has done this TWICE I'm extremely suspicious that he has done it three times.

For one...as stated by others, this isn't the first embarrassment you've let into your contest. Watch the creator's youtube...The Blue Orchid video you let in last year is just one of the damn intros to Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei.

And if all else fails, look up the damn source. It took 3 seconds to search for "Persona 4 opening." If you're not sure, look a little deeper. Hell, Niotex runs THREE different conventions in Europe, never has ANY of these problems and even takes the time to message people like Chiikaboom and Nostromo when he receives one of the millions of Attack of the Otaku or Magic Pad/Auriga rip offs to see if the entry is crossing the line a bit more than the original creators are comfortable with.

Also, how the hell can you say that there weren't any videos in the pro category with major effects. Do yourself a favor and watch Ediolon again. Then watch the full segment from the Animatrix called "Beyond." The editing is sooooooo subtle and beautifully done that I've got no doubt in my mind that no one even caught onto the fact that the editor has put OVER 4 YEARS into the technical aspects of this video and working them together so damn well.

Honestly, HOW ARE THESE VIDEOS JUDGED AND WHO IS JUDGING THEM?
Do you even HAVE anyone who watches anime or has an eye for technical skills?
How do you rate them? I know A-kon has a great way... regardless of category the give them 1-10 ratings for originality, editing, technical skills (whether it be actual effects used in the video or whether the simplicity is all it needs to look excellent) and their ability to follow proper rules and regulations and provide a clean encode. After scoring all the videos that they receive, the ones with the highest scores out of 50 (there was one other credential I can't remember for the life of me) made it into their respective categories.

With videos such as Digital Phenomenon, Eidolon, and almost ANYTHING made by Castor Troy (Dude...have you even WATCHED "Go the Distance?!" I'm REALLY questioning this judging.....
