Re: Editing Comforts
I actually need a better chair. When the room you edit in doesn't have good air flow and your system throws a lot of heat, leather chairs suck.
To be honest, I probably need a better desk as well... I've just had this old thing for so long that i've grown fond of it.
I guess what I'm trying to say is, a comfortable environment is something I haven't found yet. But I'm sure it's equal parts ergonomics and climate (try editing when your fingers and toes are freezing or when it's too hot to breath normally - it's not fun times). Reliable equipment and food/drinks are important as well. Refills allow for eye-strain prevention breaks.

Re: Editing Comforts
we never skype edit anymore ;___;
but uh. I just kinda edit whenever the fuck I get the itch.... idk. I've never found that there is a consistent evironment.. it's usually after I have an idea about a cut or something when I'm going to sleep or something, makes me wanna go make that change... then I end up making more and more.

Re: Editing Comforts
I always edit at night, but my favorite times to edit are very early in the morning, like 2-ish.
The only thing I really need to do to be "comfortable" is to keep my feet up on my chair. I can't concentrate if I don't. I have a one of those folding round chairs, but right now I'm sitting on a really uncomfortable swirl-chair thing. I'll probably switch them out now just because of this topic, except I don't know if my folding round chair is tall enough. :/
The speakers on my computer suck, but for some reason I never use earphones. Probably because I'm cheap and the only ones I have are Skullcandy earbuds
They're not comfortable and the string isn't long enough for me to move freely without yanking it out of my computer.
And sometimes, If I'm looking to feel relaxed, I'll drink tea, warm or cold, as long as it's tea xD

Re: Editing Comforts
i usually edit at night, 12am+; just because my computer is downstairs and my parents would get irritated with hearing small segments of a song replay over and over again. i sit in a very odd position when editing, basically my entire body is on the chair with my legs under me. i'll usually eat something simple before/while editing; and i almost always have a cold soda on my desk. (if i finish it i just end up replacing it a few seconds later.) i also prefer the lights in the room being on, but it doesn't really matter.
i have the same speaker problem; the speakers on my desktop are pretty horrid (quality wise) -- which really need to get replaced.. and i have skullcandy headphones rather than earbuds, and my case/tower is on the ground and unless i switch my chair's position all the way over to where it is, i can't really utilize them comfortably.

Re: Editing Comforts
1) Nighttime or Early Morning When my fellow house people aren't awake. They irritate me.
2) Diet Coke x999
3) TV Playing either South Park/Tosh.O/Phineus&Ferb/Reality TV
4) No Headphones, but I crank up the volume.
5) Usually I edit in bed, because desks irritate me as I have probably sat at one since 8 AM that day.

Re: Editing Comforts
Considering how spread out my finished videos have been, it's hard for me to specify an ideal environment to edit in.
What I do know is that I prefer nights where I have nothing else to take care of around the house. I have to be alone and not bothered. One thing I know helps me along is positive feedback from my past videos. I do look back and read comments on my videos from people who liked them, and it encourages me to keep editing. I also have to work with sources that I truly love, or have a sincere appreciation for. Above everything else, I know I absolutely have to be fully rested and in a very positive and stress-free mood to edit.
That's about all I can tell as far as an environment for editing is concerned.

Re: Editing Comforts
I just need it to be cold (or at least not hot), I can not edit when it's hot. Don't ask me why but it's just like a complete mental block whenever I edit in the heat.

Re: Editing Comforts
Best place is on my couch with my laptop on it's cooling pad, doesn't matter the time of day but I rather it be cool. Have a 2 gallon of hawaiian punch or water by side with my dog and cats in the same room and my bathroom in the next room. If I'm having a convo online with my fam, friends, or girl I feel more relaxed and amped while editing since I know I'll get to show them my work when I'm done. I'll have my earphones in while arranging clips on the timeline. If I see myself spending some time finding clips and cutting them and not doing any arranging at all on the song I'm editing with I'll turn on my big screen and play either instrumentals or r&b music thru cds on my PS3 thru the speakers on blast, sometime I'll set the channel on XM Radio's r&b channel. If I know I have to go to work or class on a day I will not edit before I go to them but I will when I come back, now while I'm at my job on breaks sometime I'll edit since I get three 35 minute breaks on 3rd shift and there's hardly anyone there to talk to.

Re: Editing Comforts
Must haves: glass of water, separate cup of coffee or tea. Generally I edit without headphones, I prefer turing up the speakers, the extra bit of loudness sortof wakes me up/gets me ready. Might listen to a few really good songs like this before I start, or watch a vid or two. Then...
1.) Check to see if anyone is playing MW2
2.) Check again to make sure
3.) Nobody is ;_;
4.) Open project and stare at it
5.) Resist the urge to turn on the TV
6.) Resist the urge to launch MW2
7.) Resist the urge to check IRC
8.) Get on skype and waste half the day
9.) Finally look at project again, start making a few cuts
10.) Stay up all night and create epic sheit
11.) Repeat
something like that.
(have to add though, when other people are on skype editing, I feel like editing, so this is usualy way more productive.)

Re: Editing Comforts
I NEED to have everything clean before I edit. My apartment is typically a pigsty, but before I can crack down and edit I have to make everything sparkle. I enjoy watching some of my favorite amvs to get in the mood, get ideas, and/or plagiarize.
