Naha Hari Dragon Boat Races

Post by kenisama » Thu May 06, 2010 6:49 am

Cinco de Mayo closed out the Golden Week celebration thats been going on here in Okinawa (and all of Japan for that matter). But for the past three months, every Saturday for two hours, a team of 32 Army Soldiers had been training for the Dragon Boat races. Stars and Stripes did an article of us (The Torii Knights), viewable here:

This was my first time and I had a blast and I hope to compete again next year (plus it gets me out of work lol). In the first photo, I'm in the first row, thrid from the right. On the boat, I was located 2nd on the right.

Fun Facts not mentioned in the article:
- We were the only US Military Service in our catagory to win our heat (thus the only Military Service to walk away with a trophy lol)
- One of the teams that raced in our heat, was a local Junior High School... sorry kids, maybe next year :(
- Don't have overall bragging rights... but we did beat the Marines =D
- Fastest time of the day goes to the Japanese Ground Self Defense Force with a time of 4'09"

You let the JSDF beat you? Are you serious?

But look at it this way... THE MARINES LOST EVEN HARDER.

HAHA.
