My Second...first

Post by TEKnician » Tue Apr 20, 2010 1:13 pm

I have issues...quality issues. Don't bother downloading it, you'll only be disappointed. I mean, if you like it that much then by all means, go ahead. But in my eyes, it's not worth it. Just watch preview, PLZ. Oh, and this is my first mash-up of more than one anime. There's TWO , well, technically 4, but still... :D

Please be honest in your criticisms. And please, read the bold quote below:
Almost as hard as fighting a Holy Paladin.

It's a good start.

The first thing I have to point out is that the 'two' anime don't correlate well. Also, neither fit with the song, in general. There were times when the clips matched the lyrics being said, but if you look at the song as a whole, they just don't work together. "Fireflies" didn't have any part in your video, which isn't that big of a deal, but it just felt random the whole time. :?

Next, it wasn't original. I'm not going to criticize the video because of that, but I'm just saying. This song has been edited to 504350943285834 times, and it's not even entertaining to watch anymore. I think there's been 3 releases with this song in the last few months. One of them was really good, and I suggest you do a little research before you start (if you care about whether your vid is original or not. Some just edit because they want to, without worrying about that thing, but if you look at it from the eyes of the viewer, it just gets boring.)

As for the actual editing, I don't really have much to say. At least it wasn't a bunch of long clips slapped on there. But I can't help watching this video without thinking of Pozoroggo's amv and comparing the two. And when you compare the two, his is noticeably better, to be blunt. Sorry. I don't know if you care about the "competition" or not, but when people say "Oh, this reminds me of some other amv..." it's not always the best thing. At least not to me. Which brings us back to the originality thing, but that's entirely up to you.
I also noticed you posted a comment on his thread of that amv. It honestly looks like you only got this idea after seeing his video, and it's good to draw inspiration from other videos, but to say "Hey, that vid is REALLY good, so I'm gunna use that exact song and do a 'mash-up' too" isn't cool, imo. But that's up to you.

Also, I'd suggest working on your quality issues, so when you add another video to the org, everyone can enjoy it via download and with good quality. The quality of the previews aren't always great, even if the quality of the download is superb. Just a heads up, because it's a good idea to have at least one good quality copy. Just read the guides and ask for help when you need it.
2/5 Keep working on it. Good for a second/first amv.

'Going to bypass my undying loathing of Owl City for you. 'Just lettin' you know that. xD

EDIT: Ok, finished. Hm... you know, I'm not sure how I feel about this one. I'll say that it's not one of my favorites for the fact that I really can't stand this song (for its popularity and its sound, in general) but this AMV was by no means terrible. I really liked that flash in and out effect you had (I believe you used it once at 1:16, and again at some other time.) I also liked a few of the clip you chose that synced up with the lyrics.

Now, as for the song choice itself, I'm going to say that you could have chosen a better one if you were going to use those anime from the start. A lot of the clips seemed a little random with the song for a big portion of the AMV, so it was a treat when the lyrics matched the clips. I'll say that the brunt of this random selection was in the first half, and the second half was much better. With the anime choices as they are, I'll say that the first half of the AMV made them seem like awkward choices if put together, but the second half leveled them out a bit.
I'll also say that whereas I liked the last 5 seconds of the last clip you used, I was really expecting an E7 clip to be thrown in there. Since that last clip was so long, you threw off the balance of the AMV there.

Overall, I did like this. 'Well worth bypassing my hate for Owl City. xD =] First half needed work, but the second half was really nice.
Nice job! 3/5.

Watched about half the preview, figured it was good enough to download. Doing that now. I want to see if the preview fracked with your aspect ratio or if that's in the distro copy. Furthermore, MOV is not generally an acceptable container on the org. It's me friendly, as That Mac Guy on the site, but even I won't subject others to my internal editing containers. You can encode via x264 and put into MP4 on Mac. There's no reason to release in MOV.

Edit:

Technical: Aspect Ratio, Aspect Ratio, Aspect Ratio. Interlacing. Over smoothing. You have some odd ghosting, almost like you over smoothed and then tried to correct by over sharpening. I also heard some small distortions in the audio.

Stylistic:

I actually like your flow, for the most part. I'm not liking the combination. Eureka 7 OR Tsubasa Chronicles, but not both. Try to eliminate some of the lip flap. There's too much. I also think your scene choices are not what they could be. They don't effectively represent the lyrics either literally or metaphorically well enough. Given the length of both of the series, I think this is a matter of not searching as well as you could have. After about 3:00, the song just seems to drag on terribly slowly, and your editing seems to match. You're trying very hard to make it interesting, but you're fighting a losing battle because the song itself just isn't. It's over, and it refuses to admit it.

I would like you to sketch out your process for editing, from beginning to end. I think we can identify some places where you are not using your resources effectively given your platform. If you tell me what programs you use and in what order, we can make sure those quality issues are dealt with immediately, and we can focus more on your storyboarding/storytelling/scene selection, etc.

There are technical quality issues, but in my eyes they're not that disturbing. And I have watched the preview, so IMO quality isn't really THAT bad.
I didn't quite like the song choice, so I guess that gives me a more biased opinion. I think that you need to watch out more for lip flap, I have seen a few.
I can't actually tell you much more to "fix" (ignoring the quality issues), I kinda thought it was good, but after 1.40 it started to fall on me. Maybe making a more consistent 'storyline' in your video might help to keep it more interesting.

It's your second/first? It's pretty well made up anyway

...meh. I'm still learnin'. Although, I must admit that I was compelled to make an AMV to this song because of Pozoroggo. I just couldn't get it out of my head! I didn't even hear of this song until he/she (somebody clarify PLZ) did that vid. And, these are the only DVDs I own...so far

But still, I have a longs wayz to go...zz. Anyways, I think this is going to be my last video for the next year or so. I wish it could've been better. But thanx 4 all your honesty  . At least I know that people are actually reading my bold quote down below.

From now on, I'm just gonna sit back and watch some more until I get better. Domo!
