The thing that precipitated this was the fact CNN featured the video. The 'Stop Motion' take on it is actually not the original Bad Apple!! Shadow Art PV, it's one that places the original video in the middle of the screen and rotates around while counting off the frame numbers. Both were actually shown in a segment on CNN:

More specifically, the reason the CNN clip is popular because of how badly (as in, completely wrong) the creation process was interpreted by the reporter.
