Many old timers especially those who might have come from the 90s fansub scene era made studio names to act as their alias.

This is somewhat different today when some groups actually use studios to represent a banding together of a bunch of friend. This was not common back then since there were relatively few people involved in the late 90s online or at conventions on a regular basis.

The alias issue is different these days as people tend to use their login for forums/twitter/youtube as the alias because that is a key level of recognition. Before studio used to be tied to the vhs tapes you sent out or the webpage you had for online presence

Bottom line: Most of us made up some studio because we sounded more badass that way =p. I mean what sounds more badass to you? dwchang vs Ninja Gaijin Productions. Outlaw vs outlawed productions.

Studios are just a way for someone to make fun of a bunch of people at once.
