I would point to Fluxmeister and jbone as two of the best examples of the word "style". They both have a very very VERY particular way that they edit, and most of their editing tricks pop up in all their videos, regardless of genre. There are exceptions of course but in general, Fluxy tends to synch his cuts to drums in rapid succession, and most noticeably on non-dominate beats like a floor tom. Fluxy is one of the only editors I know who can flash a scene for 4 frames on some obscure percussion beat and make it work, very well.

Examples:

Most of his more popular videos use a HUGE amount of cuts, and rely mostly on flat out raw editing. Great scene selection, great cuts, just great editing. This is mainly why Fluxy is popular editor, but is REVERED as a god by other editors. We know what it takes. He is an editor's editor.

jbone breaks the rules, and I've ripped him off at least twice. Its very hard to describe his style, but it is instantly recognizable: The sign of greatness, imo. jbone's usage of subtle blurs was about 1 full year ahead of anyone else's, as was the creativity of his effects. jbone will hold a scene longer than you think would be allowed, and make it work. jbone will zoom into a scene way further than what you think would be allowed, and make it work.

This video deeply inspired my own "Where Do We Go?" video. The blurs, the weirdness, the "omg thats not allowed!" effects, the whole deal. Just the surreal nature of it.

I just lifted the entire motif from this video my the climax of dead to the world (the berserk section). When I saw this video I thought, "jesus, this is a complete mess", but like all great things, it reveals itself to you over time. Its a controlled mess, like a beautifully orchestrated train wreck.

This video pioneered some effects that I still haven't seen duplicated, the motion keyframed lines especially.

I don't really know what my style is, I'm always trying new things. My most popular videos tend to be very dark and macabre. I use a couple tricks consistently, like going to black and white during a build up, then exploding to color for the climax, (hail to the thief, dead to the world, war) but I would hardly call that a "style". I like using atmospheric effects, like altering the contrast, grain, and saturation of an entire video to give it "the look". As I've gotten older and better, I focus more on internal synch of the action of a clip, and not just changing a scene on a snare drum. AMVs for me have 100% been born out of the love for the song used, so naturally the way the video is expressed varies widely.

I've always made it a point to never be pigeon holed, and I model my AMV career (can't believe I just typed that) after David Bowie. Always changing, the only consistency being the quality of the work. Style to me, is when you have a very large and developed personal motif that you filter ideas through. Danny Elfman has a style. Everything Danny Elfman does sounds like Edward Scissorhands, with the haunting strings and soft choir and whatnot.

tl;dr: fluxy and jbone have style, i don't know what mine is, plz tell me k thnx.

The same could be said for any style.

This is something I have also focused on doing over my past several videos. I tend to prefer internal sync (at least in the sense that there's some sort of movement to match with beats, whether it's emulated or straight from the anime).

Overall though I wouldn't say that I've really developed a style, so to speak. I'm constantly trying to make the things I see in my head work with the music, and often that results in completely different videos with no discernible pattern (not that I can generally see, anyway). Like Beowulf, I also tend to repeatedly use certain editing tricks that can be found throughout my whole library of videos, but all of them were either ripped off of other videos, or influenced by other videos in some way. None are irrefutably "mine".

In any case, if all goes according to plan my AWA Pro video this year will completely shatter any kind of style I may have. So I guess it doesn't really matter.

I would like to think my style had been very versatile over the years. I've done romance, drama, action, comedy...the works.

Since genre was one of the original questions. I don't really have any one genre I stick to. I've done action, quite a bit of drama, some romance, upbeat, action, and comedy and H. Have I done these well, I feel I have done some of these quite well, I'll let you decide if I really did a good job with them all, after all, it's your opinion.

As for style. I tend to use obscure and older series anymore. I tend to stray away from fancy editing such as heavy effects videos as I tend to come from the camp that believe the only good effect is one you wouldn't notice as an actual effect. I stick close to the standard types of transitions, fade and cut. I like to use internal sync more so then forcing sync. In the end I try to keep things simple and evolve the video with the music.

Though I think my 'style' is evolving and has been since I started making AMVs. I keep learning new techniques and applying them to my videos. I'm not sure there is a name for my style so again I'll let you decide. Though I know I molded my style from editors who left long ago, and some who have been around for a long time and are still around today.
