Pretty much my favorite band of all time (along with NIN, but that was already mentioned). Maybe it was the angsty HS kid I was back when I first heard any of their music that got me started, but I still enjoy listening to them today. Chances are you've heard their stuff and not even realized it (and I'm not talking about
Save Yourself, either).

Anyone who's played
Max Payne 2 will recognize this group immediately.
Late Goodbye was a great song and fit the game perfectly, but these guys still know how to put out upbeat stuff as well. Also,
Lift was used during the credits for the 3DMark2005 demo credits.

A local band (for me, anyways) that started out doing the Halloween/Spookycore routine, but well executed and with much more emphasis on the music than the horror-show aspects (which were pretty spectacular on their own). MSD, as they are known, has since ditched the blood & scars and their sound has become a lot more focused on quality while their style has taken some nice detours, tho never straying into anything remotely "light". Their newer stuff is a lot deeper and shows off not only John's vocal abilities, but also the the band's maturation and musicianship. Tracks like
Legacy and
Where The Sea Meets The Sky are dark and brooding, but amazing to listen to. Opposite of those on the spectrum are picks such as
Face The Grey and
Forever Deep, which maintain the same atmosphere with a much harder edge to them.

Act II - TBA 2009
Another band local to me (gotta love living between two cities known for awesome local bands), The Protomen have been touring all over the country gaining quite a following wherever they go. If you want to know what they're all about in a nutshell,
Act I is basically the story of Protoman and Megaman turned into an electronic rock opera. If you wander deeper into the music (and the liner notes have complete lyrics and extras that make it read like a stage/film script), it's vaguely political as well. The sparse story surrounding the games has been twisted into a dark tale of a decaying society too apathetic to save themselves from their own fate. With this comes the lone hero who sets out to save them all, only to fail due to the apathy of the populace and be thought dead. His brother discovers differently, however, when he sets out to finish what the original had started. Personal favorites are
The Will of One,
Unrest In The House of Light, and
The Stand (Man or Machine), along with
Breaking Out from the upcoming
Act II.
