I am 18 and I have been making amvs for 3 years now. Although I have been editing since the age of 12. Fortunaly I started when everything started to be made digitaly, I cant even imagine doing it with two vcrs.
*Wakes up from terrible nightmare, about editing with two vcrs, in a cold sweat*

I didn't start editing AMVs until I got into college and got to use their JVC pro-quality VHS decks. It was still a 2-deck system, technically, even though it could do insert editing and had a good jog/shuttle controller. That was my bread-n-butter from '89 up to '94, when I graduated college.
From there, went to editing on Betacam SP in 1997 and dumping to VHS. In 2001 I edited nonlinearly for the first time, using a Lightworks VIP system, then dumping to VHS. In all cases, I was still working from VHS source.
Now, I have home nonlinear capability, a MiniDV camcorder for better VHS transfer, and a DVD-ROM player for rippable source.
While I might be the most outspoken geezer here, I must still give the title to Vlad.
The two-deck system was also used very extensively by Corn Pone Flicks' Matt Murray, a contemporary of mine who could do things with consumer-grade Sony VHS VCRs that I never dreamed.
