Please observe the following unique rules for this forum:
  • Please limit your new threads (not replies) to one per week. If you have several new videos to announce, create one thread for all the videos. (Note: if you forget one you can edit your post!)
  • Offsite links are allowed, but you are required to have a catalog entry for that video as well. Threads announcing videos that do not contain a catalog entry will be moved to the Awaiting Catalog Entry sub-forum and will be deleted in 2 weeks if an entry is not created.
  • When posting announcements, it is recommended that you include links to the catalog entries (using the video ID) in your post.
  • Videos that do not contain anime are allowed to be announced in the Other Videos section and are not required to have catalog entries.

Polymanga 2009 5 years anniversary official video (legal)

Post by Top50 » Fri Jan 23, 2009 4:51 am

Video can be seen here : http://www.polymanga.com/5yearsvideo.php

Enjoy :). Yes, with some discussion with publishers and time, AMV can be legal ;).

Polymanga 2009 5 years anniversary official video (Next event 11-13th of April 2009)
Polymanga is the biggest event in Switzerland about Manga, Videogames and Japanese Culture.
All the rights have been asked to the European publisher (Kaze Animation), including copyright text from Japanese animations, which makes this AMV legal.

The video also uses Polymanga 2008 pictures. Audio is ripped from Daft Punk DVD Interstella 5555. Please note that the video has been made from "approved" content. That means that you can't modify the speed of the original content and take only the approved trailers from a limited amount of anime titles.

Interesting.

I will get solely on the basis of Legal.

I assume Daft Punk (or their rights holders in Switzerland) also gave permission?

EDIT: Uhm, legal or not, do not direct link to embedded YouTube videos. That's against OUR rules.

Please upload an actual distributable file either to your own server, or to the the A-M-V.org site when uploads return (currently the server is being worked on).

I didn't know, I checked the forum rules, added the video on the database and posted. This is not a youtube video, the flv is hosted on my own server. Does .flv file count as "youtube" ?

Actually Interstella 5555 (daft Punk anime) is published by Kaze Animation as well in Europe, so they have the rights.

Ah. You know good question. I will clarify, I am not a moderator. Just a really old hat. I believe that the embedded nature of the streaming flv clip is what annoys us on general principles. I just assumed that because of the embedding it was YouTube or some other video streaming site.

The fact that direct links must be a downloadable, distributable file, however, is a definite. Linking to a page offsite would be an indirect link.

In any case, we would all much prefer something downloadable, as opposed to flv. XviD/AVI and h264/MP4 are the preferred formats.

Okay I heard you, I modified the link called "direct" with "indirect" (I didn't really know the difference as when you go to the website you can DIRECTly watch the video on the website without registering or download it and it's not yout.).

As for the direct download file, this is quite tricky. Actually Japanese licencers are mad about anything that can be directly downloaded. Watch it = alright. Download it = can be a problem. I don't really know what's the difference really as with some kind of plugin you can grab the bitrate. In the end, I am used with dealing with Japanese guests and I was published in 2008 by an association related to the Japanese government (DCAJ) about Japanese content in Switzerland and Europe in the last 30 years. So I do care about rights and licences. And I thought this could be interesting for you.

Japanese licensors took a LOT of time before putting even their own trailers on the web. It's a step after another. I goes slowly but steadily. So if you don't mind, I'd rather not make it downloadable as a file, it was a hard process to get the rights I don't want to annoy them :). Well if you want a file, get a plugin ;).

I am open to chat if people want to discuss about it, I've been working in the industry for 10 years already. I would be glad to share my experience, if anyone is interested...

Greetings

Oh, I follow. Check my location. It is of extreme importance to know the laws of my own (adopted) country, even when I feel ethically justified in breaking them. I can't vote here, but I can (and do) support causes, political parties, politicians, etc I agree with.

You are certainly free to not put up a downloadable, distributable file. We only request a proper catalogue entry and an appropriate link (indirect, in this case). I can understand where you are coming from, as do most on this site, especially those of us who have worked in the industry (and I have). Do not see my information as a demand you create a downloadable file. While I hold a personal bias against streaming video, that is of no relevance here.

It's always best on any forum to lurk before posting. That way, you can be sure to pick up on any unwritten rules, as well as those that are written. Perhaps we are not as clear in the forum rules about the difference between direct and indirect links. I will bring that up with one of the moderators and see if we can get that clarified.

Oh I did check the rules and looked at the forum. That's why I added the video in your database before posting, and I just changed direct for indirect value.

Most of the time I found out that discussing with people isn't that hard as long as you are polite, introduce yourself correctly and explain your point. Of course you just can't do anything you want (I had to change my video twice to comply with authorised content). But I find it much more satisfying to have some limitations to do it. In my point of view, a "legal" tag is valuable and make it interesting and enjoyable while not too badly done (but I admit there's much better to find in AMV, people spent much more time than I).

It's not my first battle, 8 years ago, I could get the rights from an old SNES rom to make the translation and release it. There was no virtual console then ;). It was really new at this time and it got published on both big emulation websites. Well yeah, I work in videogames as well ;).
