Re: Star Trek...
I have huge doubts about this movie (I have had them since I heard about this)...
It seems nostalgia is the latest trend these days... though TOS wasn't my favorite series anyways
(heh...)
The motorcycle scenes remind me of the prequel of the Star Wars Trilogy previews with Anakin for chapter III... it was the first thing to come to my mind sorry. And I was all WTF?!?! about the fact that Chibi-Kirk nearly drove himself off a cliff in a Mustang.... O.o
And well not that Shatner was a brilliant actor in his time (hahahahahahahahahahahahahaaha *ahem*), but I donno about this guy playing Kirk in the movie.. I guess I'll see when the movie comes out... But I can't say that any the "Kirk stuff" looked remotely interesting to me... However the "Spock stuff" looks promising... O.o The effects look kickass O.o but I donno what I'll think of the story...
Being a resident "Trekkie" I'm going to go see it anyways, however I'm going to have low expectations, but then again I usually do... I just don't want to get myself pumped up to see this "amazing film" and be disappointed by shoddy acting overshadowed by amazing effects.
P.S. all the hardcore nerds on one of my Yahoo Groups is all over this movie half think its going to be terrible just because the set design is drastically different, the other half are willing to give it a chance...
I'm one of those willing to give it a chance, but I'm not going to expect anything from it.

Re: Star Trek...
The charm of Star Trek was how cheesy it was. TOS was barely a step ahead of Buck Rogers for christ sake. The entire franchise went straight to the shitter once they started taking themselves seriously. I mean come on, most of the best moments in the movies were pure cheese. "Don't forget where we parked" "Excuse me, why would god need a starship?" and other such lines.
I'm not really seeing any indications this movie will return to the cheese so fuck it, the series is dead to me. Has been since the first season of DS9 really.

Re: Star Trek...
I completely missed the original Star Trek, before my time, always seemed too old fashioned and dated as a kid. I was a Next Generation girl. I read the kiddie novels and then the teenage novels, and loved the series and the moves and all the characters had a special place in my heart. I tried following some of the characters when I heard they popped up in subsequent series (DS9, maybe), but it didn't work. It wasn't just one or two likable characters, it was the whole team and how they fit together. I'd sooner re-rent TNG from netflix than go watch this new movie. I never got to know the original Star Trek guys, so I'm not interested in their "younger" selves. I might watch it if a family member buys it and lends it to me a few years from now, just to see some space ships.
Now, if they decided to make a movie based on the next generation "kiddie" backstories in those junior novels, I'd love to watch that. It might take time to get used to the new actors playing the roles, but I'd be invested in the characters. And some of those little novelettes had really interesting stories.

Re: Star Trek...
I saw the new trailer during the previews for QoS.
I'm excited, but I do wonder now that I know more about the story if this movie will have an Enterprise effect on the original storyline. The bridge in the trailer seems more advanced then the enterprise B did. I can understand the update in the outside CG, using the new technology. I realize that without some updates in the look they wont be able to sell the movie to anyone who hasn't seen the original and would go for the nostalgia of it.
It looks like they've done a fairly good job finding actors who look similar to how the original actors did back in the day. I'm excited to see how this new story will play out.
I'm just a little leery.
Grant it, that's not gonna stop me from catching the Midnight showing and probably watching it 2-3 more times that opening Friday.

Re: Star Trek...
Aside from the Tribble episode which was some awesome series blending and probably one of my favorite episodes... there wasn't much in the way TOS/DS9 crossovers aside from referencing episodes and concepts... TNG had all the older actor cameos.Arigatomina wrote:I tried following some of the characters when I heard they popped up in subsequent series (DS9, maybe), but it didn't work.

Even with all it's cheese, TOS still made a lot of political statements that reflect the time it was created in.
And as for the Enterprise effect - that's exactly what came to mind when I heard about this... But the creators of Enterprise didn't want to make a Star Trek series, they wanted to make a space/sci-fi adventure series that happened to have familiar aliens :/
