Reducing Size for a site banner

Post by ultimateX021 » Fri Oct 17, 2008 6:20 pm

Thank god I received tremendous help on my forum banner, but now I encountered a problem with a site banner.

My site banner meets the required size: 468 pixels in width and 60 pixels in height.
However, it states that it must be about 20 KB or less, but it exceeds 1 MB. I may have to remove some text or try to foreshorten my picture, but it looks good to me.

Any suggestions on reducing the size?

Change the format? I'm thinking .JPG, or if worse come to worse, .GIF.

My guess is you have a .PNG or something on your hands.
... yea ...

A program like the GIMP has quality options when you save/export, so if you're not using that you may want to give it a try

something like photoshop can be better, because it allows you to choose a color palate (on top of what the GIMP can do) which is especially helpful for .gif images

Er, when you convert an image to Indexed mode in The GIMP (which you have to do before saving as .GIF anyway), it lets you specify a custom palette -- the palettes are stored as .GPL files in the directory [GIMP installation]\share\gimp\2.0\palettes

Guess what?

It just so happens I saved it as a Roxio Photosuite photo document which made the file size huge. I have a Roxio Digital Media Program that I use to edit photos, videos, and other stuff. It's good for making banners, but it doesn't allow me to make a lot of the cool effects I've seen recently. It's not all that bad, but I prefer Adobe Photoshop, which I like to thank Kariudo for reminding me.

Anyway, I converted it to Jpeg and it's size went down to 10.9 KB. Plus, it's still the same size. I'll keep in mind what Scintilla and Kariudo said about the Gimp(just in case). For now, thanks for mentioning about the file type because I completely forgot to check that one out.
