Validity of AMVs in college applications.

I would definitely recommend making some amvs and getting involved with some film groups/communities on your spare time so by the time you get out of college, you'll have some good video editing experience under your belt.

I graduated with a Liberal Studies degree since my school also didn't offer media, but my resume and work experience mostly focuses on my video work.

Yes, the communities are what i'm looking for quite intensively really. The fact is that where i am, there doesn't seem to be much of a base for video editing/graphics. Hmmm, maybe i'm looking in the wrong places.

I actually used an AMV for my final in Desktop Video class and got an A-. Also, my admissions advisor used my amvs in part for my admission to the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. For me, they have been helpful since I am going for video production, but how it will help is based on the school.

On topic:
I have used amvs to get some really nice contract positions in the past. Not sure how that works during a college interview process. Personally I have composed an entire DVD resume that I pass out at job fairs etc with 3d animations that I have made, and some cool shit I just threw together at random with AE. It gets killer wow factor and is a hell of a lot it more effective than piece of paper saying: yeah, I have worked with "Program X" for this many years.

Yes, i intend to apply to a college in that discipline but, i could someone explain why colleges would reject AMVs?
They are indeed a display of technical skill with all the effects available and how you choose to use them. They also enable you to tell a story in quite a different way. Perhaps interviewers prefer something more organic?

Now one question i would like to clear is the kind of degree i would have to apply for if i was to become a professional video editor. After this BE course of mine, would i have to get into an MA or MFA course in video/film production or is there a different degree to look out for?

It wasn't my AMVs themselves but the video experience I'd gotten from AMVs that convinced my boss to hire me.

A way that AMVs could hurt you is because a lot of colleges won't accept copyrighted work in their portfolio requirements. They won't necessarily bar you from entry, but most colleges will want to see some work that is original as well, such as editing with stock footage or footage you shoot yourself.

As far as what degree, that depends on the college of course. I am attempting a Bachelors of Science in Digital Media Production at my school, which encompasses all facets of video production, I have just made my focus editing. Most likely you will not find a specific degree for editing, instead you will have to pursue a degree like a general video production degree.
