That's a lot more steps then I used to do when I was still on Windows. I'd just take the .VOBs directly to VirtualDubMod and export them from there into the .AVI codec of your liking.
Also, if you want to try something completely new (if that doesn't work), give Handbrake a try for ripping your disc. The program will go straight from disc to .mp4, .avi, .ogm, or .mkv. Only thing is that the codec options are more limited than in VDM, but the ease of use is very high.
