Joke, eh? Of course it is illegal to download anime! If you don´t pay for it, you steal it.

However there are some plenty of nice sites on the web that will help you with music:

www.lastfm.com
Listen to tons of songs for free with online streaming and it´s legal. It´s better to already know the songs before you buy the cd ;)

www.jamendo.com
A great site for legal free avaible music. Just browse through the various music tags and I´m sure that you´ll find a lot of good bands. Well at least I did... Ah yeah: You can download the songs from the site too.
You can find me on YT under "Bauzi514". Subscribe to never miss my AMV releases. :amv:

to avoid misleading you, ripping encrypted dvds (which most anime dvds are) is also illegal under US law.

however, what we find is that buying dvds and cds and ripping them is more ethical than downloading footage. properly citing your sources is good too.

Mmm, I didn't think ripping a DVD you own was illegal unless you start distributing it. (Which is what we do in the end, of course, though if you play your cards right, you might fall under fair use.)

Might as well make a short-lived discussion out of this before it's locked. XD
... yea ...

I always assumed that it would fall under fair use if we made no profit from AMVs. Oh...I have an anime DVD in my hands right now.
DVD Fine Print wrote:This product is authorized for private home use only. Federal law provides severe civil and criminal penalties for the unauthorized reproduction, distribution, or exhibition of copyrighted motion pictures, video tapes, and video discs. (Title 17, U.S. Code, Section 501 and 506) The FBI investigates allegations of criminal copyright infringement. (Title 17, U.S. Code, Section 506).
Heh...would you look at that...guess even if you don't profit it's still considered illegal LivingFlame...since we're reproducing and exhibiting it without permission. Feds should be busting down my front door any minute now.

Making AMVs is illegal

Owning a DVD gives you the right to view it in your home and stuff
but it doesn't mean you can do anything you want with it.

To get your footage from a DVD, you have to CRACK the copy protection on the disc with a DVD decryption program.
Pretty much the same as putting a crack on some kind of software because you are breaking through a protection to use the sources.

That means just having the footage ripped on your HD is breaking a law.
Uploading a fishined music video on the internet is breaking the law again
because you are exhibiting copyrighted video and audio material without permission from the copyright owners.

We live such a dangerous life..
