I have never considered industry ANY industry, as always being a bastion of brains and wise choices.
AMVs are basically free advertising, and advertising costs a great deal of money.
Fansubs are free advertising, and again, advertising is damned expensive.
How many animes would I have bought in the absence of fansubs?
Precisely zero. Not one. A great big f**king donut, nadda.
How many fansubs have I encountered because of a great AMV, actually quite a few.
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzimiya and Lucky Star to name two.
I'd own both dvd sets today if they were on sale as box sets right now. But that isn't an option just yet. Maybe next years Anime North.
Is music and film special on being often quite stupid? Nope.
Models, plastic models, models of famous planes for instance.
The average major aviation company, say for instance McDonnell Douglas, won't let joe nobody model making company make models of their planes without getting a bit of profit. Asinine isn't it?
They can make a many million dollar military jet, and make em by the dozens, but they can't let a schmuck company make some lousy plastic kits without forcing the kit company to add to the price to give the major corporate entity their cut.
There eventually comes a time when protecting property rights enters the realm of "screw them".
And I suuuuure don't like hearing people mention "oh they have to protect the little guy's job" that works in that industry. The industry doesn't give a damn for the schmucks in its ranks.
Sure some AMVs suck terribly. But bugging scmucks making AMVs is the same as screwing over the people promoting the market awareness of the product.
Justice would be lost sales from a decline in people hearing about the show and never wishing to buy it as a result.
Anime, one of the few things about the internet that doesn't make me hate the internet.
