Are we over-complicating matters?

I edit and I don't enjoy it. The reason I make/made AMVs is because I think/thought the unpleasantness is/was worth it, not because I thought it was fun. This, I suppose, begs the question of whether making AMVs is really a hobby of mine if I find it so unpleasant, since hobbies are supposed to be positive experiences.

Oh who says hobbies are supposed to be all nice and good? =P

Well I can whole-hearteadly agree with that. Editing is fucking boring to me nowdays, which is propably the reason I edit unreasonably slow >_> However, the results are worth it, and I love being active in this community and watching / reviewing other people's work etc. I always plan amvs in my head too. Like right now, I have a hundred ideas (good ideas) in my head yet I know only 5% of them are ever going to be edited =|

I view making AMVs and making stromboli in the same light. The process is kinda tedious and a pain in the ass, a bit longer than it should be, and overall not usually THE most enjoyable thing in the world to do. But the end result makes it all worth it in the end. (hopefully. )

Yeah, I think sometimes too much emphasis is placed on the technical than the enjoyment factor or the actual editing. Yeah, there's too much of people trying to "keep up with the Jones'" as well as people expecting others to keep up. But eh, those who do do this purely for fun just ignore all that anyway. (I know I'm trying more and more to. ) So yeah. Stuff. *^_^*

According to the original meaning of the word "sophisticated" are videos have become too sophisticated.

Not sure what meaning you are thinking of, but I assume it's
"technically sophisticated"? Because most AMVs follow this one
very simple recipe: show what the song says. It's sometimes clever,
but after watching a two-hour show the other day I realized how boring
and predictable this becomes, no matter how many effects are used
to dress it up.

The old original meaning of the world was to some extent indicative of something possessing too much of that which wasn't always needed. Fancy for fancy's sake, rather than for any useful purpose. To sophisticate was to add superfluous extras in an effort to dress up and make appear better.

Well its been a while. I honestly have to say I think I lost my way in editing. At first I started out because it was fun and though hey that would make a great video. Then as time went on and went to more conventions I became more determined to perfect my videos or coming up with an idea. Then began over thinking the process. Until last year in 2007 when I made Hunters or the Hunted. I didn't really care if people didn't like the song, but I thought it would be awsome to use a song you made on your own.

To answer your question I think it is more of a phase that an editor goes through, some break out of it, some don't. Right now for me it is more or less try to create something I'm happy with. I want to expand my boundaries and try new styles and effects. Not because of what people think, but to see what I can accomplish. My newest video has been taking me a while now because Premiere can't handle the tracks. Go figure try something new and the program crashes. So I'm still stuck but hopefully I'll finish it soon.

Just relax. For me AMV's can kill alot of time and after getting the programs you need it is relatively cheap. For it doesn't cost anything to sit at home and edit your video. (Hmmm.. Travel - Gas $4 a gallon, hurts the wallet. Or sit at home and edit a video.)

Hmm...I'm going to have to ponder that further. If AMVing is not a hobby to me, then what is it? Punishment for some sin in a past life? Man...I must have been BAD.

If you aren't really enjoying it, you probably should find something else you are more interested in or take a break from it.

Id be lying if I said that gathering and cutting my footage (especially if its a multi-anime video) is always fun.
but I always enjoy the actual editing progress.
I might be wierd but its always fun for me to see my ideals
comming together in the video editor.
Thats the whole reason I took up this hobby.

The only time editing is not fun for me is when
i put off something till near the deadline and then have to force
myself to finish in time.
I fear that this situation is coming soon >_<

Its nice that after all this time I can still say I just make what I want and enjoy doing it.

Time was I could make a video using nothing but straight cuts and a/b fades with the occasional white flash. I could then watch said video and think to myself "hot damn we have a winner".

You would also be lying if you said cleaning up the footage is fun. You sound a lot like me when it comes to my attitude towards editing.

Getting footage and encoding it: Long, boring, and you have to restart the computer when it freezes during encoding.

Editing: Fun if you play around with the buttons and such as if you were doing a YouTube poop. Not to mention if you have most of the idea already developed, then it's also easier.
