I used to read ALLOT but if you pick up a fiction novel of any kind these days it's the same old crap re-done and rebadged same with 99% of movies and tv shows (point in fact I only watch DVDs or play games on my TV, i dont actually watch TV (Insular shell much?)) In the anime space they still manage to challenge your imagination and acomplish things we can only dream of yet it doesn't look as unbelieveable as the Hong Kong movie wire work, because these aren't real people.
It also has the added benefit of removing complete fucktards from the genepool, like those who try to actually be Naruto. Not to mention ensuring that a certain subset of humanity never actually gets laid or breeds, which is also blessing for the rest of us.
All in all Anime contributes to survival of the fittest in the continued evolution of humanity on this planet and provides escapism for people not on the emo/narutard endangered species list. As well as a totally skewed version of reality where every one seems to be "special" :\
If anyone ever actually read the WIlliam Gibson novel "Neuromancer" or studied it you would know that he actually conceptualised the internet long before it became reality, anime itself could well have then next "idea".
other than that, I think "most" anime is for immature children with no grip on reality and need a serious kick up the ass by their parents
