Story in Tribute AMVs

When doing a character specific tribute video, how important do you think story is in the video? Do you think a story should be attempted in the video to try and capture the actual story line or an event that happened in the anime involving the tribute characters?

This seems like a tricky thing to do. The reason being is that I believe the song dictates this and certain clips go better with the song to provide the feeling the editor is going for and a story might force the editor to use less quality/less impactful clips for a specific style of song. For example if your going for an adrenaline rush, certain story based clips might actually hinder that, but then again the dellema here is to provide a tribute and highlight the character.

Simply put, for some characters the source material might not provide enough clips to get both the feeling and the story arc you want to portray. Thus there is only so much footage to choose from.

So what do you think about this?

If you don't put at least enough story in it so people not familiar with the series can follow what you're doing then the only people who might possibly like the video are those who happen to have seen the series. If that's what you want then fine but you should be aware from the start that your possible audience is fairly tiny.

mMMmM I don't think character profile AMVs have to capture exactly what happened in the anime and can be more interesting to those who have seen the anime or have not if it didn't, example: did it really matter whether most viewers who have not seen Kanon thought Mai suicided and died because of this video? But there are cases where character profile AMVs really do a good job at following the story and emotion of the scenes such as this Ayu tribute - and this Makoto one - . So I don't necessarily think an editor needs to stab a viewer with a story, a lot of different things come into practice here like the viewer's own chosen interpretation of the visuals and what beowulf was mentioning before in his rant about being 'emotionally engaged', presentation plays an important role here and maybe moreso than the storyboard. I don't think AMVs which are completely linear to the point of saying 'editor x was trying to do this and this then this' are as engaging as ones which make you think a little, even if its way off from the editor's initial purpose. Sometimes the lack of footage for a particular part of the song can hinder the video but it doesn't mean that you can't shorten the audio or edit parts out - Nayuki tribute -

This is very true. Most of my favorite profile type AMVs, in fact, give the character a different personality or puts them in different situations.

Apparently at least one person didn't get it. The guy who didn't is kinda clueless and wouldn't understand if the text in the avatar said 'SHE'S STARING AT A GUYS CROTCH!' but even so, to any who are confused, that thing on the right is a guys crotch.
