It's not always about synch. Some of my favorite songs express moods that are rarely found in or incompatible with anime. As much as I'd like to make amvs with them, I wouldn't start a project if I weren't feeling the anime+music match.

x2

There are a couple of songs that I love and would probably try to make a video with, but I'm not even sure if any existing anime would actually have the subject matter or scenes that depict the relevant mood or lyrics.

Not any song can have a proper match with some anime. Thus many amvs can not be made unless you're just planning to throw some random scenes together, if that counts.
Try Iced Earth's "Dante's Inferno", for example - how many animes are there that describe hell in this way and can suffice for a 16 minute amv? Or would that look good with random shit?

I would like to remind the world of just how fucking awesome I am.

No, I do not have anything else to contribute.

Given enough creativity, making a GOOD video with Dante's Inferno would be doable, particularly if you partitioned it off into the levels of hell. Or, you could use a different anime for each partition, displaying what exactly it all means.

There, conceptualized. Not that difficult. :P Granted, exactly which anime you'd use is a good question, but the fact that it's that easy to come up with the basic premise shows that it's doable.

Some songs are really hard to edit to but nothing is impossible. Hell, Jbone made a video to 5 minutes of silence... :P

Usually, I will know within the timelining and footage cutting if the song is actually doable...

It's not only possible, but with enough "power of bullshit" you can make the artfags cling to you and tell you how deep you are.

Another thought:

I actually find "borderline music" or "non-music" easier to edit to than some obviously structured but complex types of music. I had no trouble envisioning Conet, Mama or other weird videos that I did to noise/spoken word/other audio sources from the moment I was introduced to the idea or came up with it myself. On the other hand there is swaths of complex improv music I listen to where sync (be it beat or mood) would be easier to come up with, but where the structure, mood and other considerations introduce a lot more complications for editing than silence, random noise or drunken yelling ever would.
