The AMV contest problems were bad (let's be honest), but the con itself as a whole had FAR more disappointment in the two years I've attended which I can't forgive.
Even if you won't be attending, your videos are still welcome. If you miss out on sending your video, you're missing out on having your video screened in the biggest possible venue an AMV could ever hope to be screened at. The Nokia ballroom is HUGE. The Academy Awards were held at this place!
As for the problems and such, only time and consistent years of smoother running (I'd say "smooth", but no con of AX or Otakon's size will achieve that) will fix that. All I'll say is there's good people -- Michael and myself included -- trying to put on a good show, and get just as angry when things go wrong (especially when they're caused by things external and outside of your control)...
...Ugh. I better end this post before I go on a tirade about 2007. I'm getting angry just thinking about it.
I don't mean for this to come across in an asshole'ish manner, but realize it will, but...Otakon *has* had fairly smooth and problem-free (at least to the viewers and editors) contests when Matt Pyson ran it. I fondly remember 2003 being my first 'serious contest' and was very impressed how well the entire thing was handled given the size and number of entries (~200 entries). And yeah, it was overwhelming to see the size of the venue (similar to AX...~5,000 people?) and hear/see that many people applaud your video. It remains my favorite contest and Otakon my favorite anime con.
Unfortunately, that has not been the case in years past, but I guess my point is...it *is* possible for these larger contests to be run smoothly and well (and now for the encouraging part),
I hope AX can attain a similar feat. I hear from Pwolf that AX 2003 was pretty good so there ya go.
As for myself, I don't edit that much to begin with and generally only send to contests I am attending and well...since I've had such bad experiences with AX in the past (beyond AMVs), I am choosing not to attend this year. I do want to reiterate that 99% of these grievances are not due to the AMV contest but related to the way the con itself was run and all the problems well...everywhere.
I'm hoping Castor will one day come to Otakon and then see that AX is *not* the norm in terms of everything being late, waiting in line for 3 hours, overcrowded, etc. Pwolf did. Then again, he has been to Comic-Con with me and that was run SO efficiently...given they hire a secondary professional staff so yeah >_>. Unfortunately, I realize you are not in control of such things and this is a larger con related problem (that I'm sure you're aware of).
OK now *I* am ranting so I uhhh...took care of you not ranting Troy >_>.
