Do you actually still keep your vhs stuff?

Post by Sukunai » Sat Feb 09, 2008 11:03 am

Ok I hope this doesn't sound elitist in some way, but I am curious if you still keep your vhs anime, or even still watch it?

The reason I ask, is I don't know anyone that still uses a vhs machine let alone anything on vhs.
I recall my friend going and dropping his vhs collection like it was stock that was plunging in value back when dvd finally started appearing in any sort of amount (must have been no earlier than 2000).

He had at the time a quite serious friggin impressive anime collection then too. Not just "some" anime, but anime the likes of which would allow for an instantaneous rental operation to start up :)
He dumped it at the local retail location that sold anime (yes we actually had a couple of asian stores that provided anime), and got store credit and converted over to dvd.
The owner likely cut him a lot more slack than anyone would have gotten, the same way any logical business usually treats a customer that can be relied on to buy 1/3 or more of your stock on a regular basis.

Myself, I think I have 3 vhs anime tapes around here somewhere. Relics that were dumped on me by friends that now have dvd copies.
I wouldn't even keep them at all if not for the fact that I still have a small tv/vcr combo I use to watch some old vhs documentaries and movies I can't locate in dvd for love of money yet.

To me, my anime is either fansub downloads on dvd storage, or dvds themselves.

I turfed vhs out of my life the second I managed to get unlimited broadband internet.
Might not sound "nice" from a commercial standpoint, but I had no qualms downloading a film, and then giving away the vhs copy. Besides, no one in my nowhere town had any interest in stocking my moldy oldie documentaries and war movies anyway.
And I sucked at doing video capture copies. As I saw it, I was just being lazy downloading the copy. It's not like I was getting a better copy (ever watched old documentaries in dvd :) they don't suddenly become great looking, they're just digital now).
Anime, one of the few things about the internet that doesn't make me hate the internet.

I still have about 20 anime VHS tapes kicking around back at my house. If i could ever find a buyer i'd get rid of them in a heartbeat. They're just collecting dust and i'll most likely trash them when I end up moving out to make packing easier.

I have like 40+ or so VHS tapes laying around. Haven't watched them in forever and like Basher said, I'd get rid of them in a hearbeat if I could find a buyer.
meh...

Actually, I still have Project A-ko, Princess Mononoke, Utena, FY and Blue Seed on vhs. They still get watched quite a bit too, by the kids, since their tvs have the built in VCRs. Even though I have the dvds, I haven't lost a use for the vhs' that I still have, so no real reason to chuck 'em.
Now, don't feel bad. It's not you, it's me. I Don't Like You. -.-

I still have the Escaflowne boxed set, and that's because I'm loathe to part with something that cost me so much money that I couldn't really afford at the time!

I'd actually like to convert it to DVD. That way, I wouldn't feel as bad about giving it away... I just need to stop procrastinating about it.

I have a lot of anime on VHS that was never released to DVD, so until I copy them to dvd with the best quality I can get it to or they come out on DVD, I don't plan to get rid of them.
