Lots and lots of people, who don't announce their videos and don't show them at cons. I can't tell you the number of quality videos I've downloaded that will never get the recognition they deserve because the editor isn't a forumite, or isn't well-known enough. There's a reason that the only people who ever win the VCAs are people who are popular in the AMV community, which makes sense.Greggus1 wrote:Honestly, who deserves recognition and hasn't gotten any, through the VCAs or cons?
I agree with this too, but again, if you consistently put out good work but no one knows about it, you won't ever become popular, period.Greggus1 wrote:I also believe in the principle that you become popular when putting out consistently good work, and that one excellent video should not automatically get you recognition.
That's not to say this proposed contest will fix all that, because I really don't know that this would garner enough attention from people outside the forums for the results to be any different at all from the VCAs. But I say it's worth a shot.

so you are actually telling me that this "judges" will download and judge the THOUSANDs of action/drama/romance/horror/instrumental/etc vids and "judge" them to see the ones that pass the preliminaries?
good luck with that.
And I really don't see the point, I preffer to vote for the ones I trully think should win, even if I'm not satisfied with the results (specially last years'). Just wanted to say that.

I was going to reply with something lengthy, but it looks like Jasper and Holden already expressed my main concerns.
I think it'll be difficult to get a true *fair* and balanced judging system. There are too many friendships, studio affiliations, etc. that folks WILL find a way to complain. At the same time (and I do realize this is pretty mean) folks ARE biased so...I dunno. To be honest, I've seen A LOT of circle jerking on the org over the years (lol old person) so like I said, I think it'll be fairly difficult.
At the same time (as obvious as it was and yet I hadn't thought of it), the idea of anonymous judges is attractive, but again, how are they chosen? Even if we 'vote' on them, that still presents some bias since you could argue "oh only folks who frequent the forums voiced their opinion so it's biased to them..." etc.
Wow now that I think about it, no matter what you do, people will complain
.
In any case, the idea overall seems cool, but (again) you gotta be really careful how you go about doing it. I know I've voiced my qualms about the VCAs before, but they do serve their purpose which is to show off a few vids each year and honor them...even if it's only a small cross section and the 'popular stuff.' However, they never stated that their goal was to pick TEH BEST VIDEO EVER, BAR NONE or anything right so I dunno...
Wow I'm rambling...

Ya, it would be nice if the VCAs where more transparent. We don't need to know who voted for what, however it would be nice to see the total number of votes for each video and such ....Koopiskeva wrote:all things considered.. i wonder how many videos are actually nominated in the vcas before the semi-finalists are picked.. ?

I actually disagree. I have my theories and feel I have enough 'data' to make a reasonable conclusion, but I think most semi-finalists actually don't get that many nominations. I've actually been a supporter of the past VCAs which were smaller and there were only 5 - 6 finalists and that was it.JudgeHolden wrote:Ya, it would be nice if the VCAs where more transparent. Then again, to be honest, I haven't even looked at or participated in the last two VCAs, but the last one I remember, there were like 20 - 30 videos per category in the semi's with like...20 of them being things I hadn't even heard of (given that's the point right...to highlight things). HOWEVER (imo) the finalists just became what everyone thought they would've been anyway and thus...the semis just had extra videos that I imagine were only nominated by a handful of folks.
I guess what I'm saying is that the semi-finals didn't really add anything since the same finalists were nominated by the end anyway.
I imagine the admins (if any) could probably confirm or deny my conclusion, but yeah...I think most videos only need maybe 9 - 10 noms to get into the semis and I think that's a bit ridiculous and way too low. I mean viewer's choice (to me) implies more than that of 10 people's opinion >_>.
And let's be frank, with all the circle jerking and self-pimping in the VCA forums...we all know a TON of folks who just nominate themselves and friends which well...is more inline with my conclusions.
...can you tell I'm not a fan of the VCAs yet?

I'm thinking of the VCAs as a whole. I would be nice to see the numbers from each round of voting.dwchang wrote:Excellent ideainthesto wrote:Obviously we play DotA to pick the judges.

All some great ideas..
However eveyone must keep in mind that for such things to work "volunteers" are needed to run it... If ther are judges also keep in mind the time factor to be able to fairly judge all the videos (lots) from the year... And then keeping eveythign honest and balanced would be apile of work as well.
I only say that because last years VCAs were already hard to ind someone to run them and then all the "politics" you got to put up with from all of it too
