file-tracking?

Post by Phantasmagoriat » Tue Oct 09, 2007 12:04 am

I don't know if it's possible, or how easy it would be, or if it's even been brought up before, but I think there should be a system of referencing the files downloaded to the cataloged video entry. Most of the time, I dl an amv, and if I'm interested, I'll read the video profile afterwards-- but sometimes the vid is hard to find since the creator doesn't give it a good filename, nor provide physical credits within the amv...

Yes I know if I cared enough, I could find a way of tracking down any video, but it would be more convenient if there was a way of referencing the dld file to the catalog.

One way I can think of is to append the video number to the end of the file name [similar to when you upload an amv, and it is changed from 'filename.mp4' to 'TEST - filename.mp4'... or however it works] so instead of my amv named 'Shout.avi' it could be 'Shout - 149144.avi' I was also thinking maybe usernames instead since it tells you something immediately without looking it up, but I don't know... [...so like 'Shout - Phantasmagoriat.avi' ... or something like that]. maybe there's a better way...

anyways, it's just a suggestion that doesn't have to be done [So don't think that you have to... because you guys do plenty anyways ;) ]

Or, you know, you could just change the name of the file itself as soon as it gets downloaded. Filenames aren't permanent once their on your computer.

It's a good idea that has been suggested before.

Many editors just add their names themselves, but I have many AMVs which I don't know who created until I check it out here too >.>

I like the idea, but with those numbers,it would be a bit work for the system. Just think of the task to rename ALL THE VIDS on the server, get them in right line, and number them as they really are in numbers?

I'd just suggest something like in the upload page :

When uploading a video, please enter actual video title and your username in the filename of the file.

That way maybe there would be less confusing files like "Senza Nome",which is actually "AAML Ash and Misty love (Satoshi to Kasumi)" XD
:D I like laughter ;DD

when you dl a video and its on your member's main page waiting for stars, the file name is in that little group of info and a link to the profile as well.

Only if you downloaded it locally.

Personally, I ignore all given filenames and rename them all with my own personal naming convention when prompted to save.

is there a way for them to tack on names or numbers to off host files?

yeah, so I usually end up changing the file names myself too. I only didn't in this case since I was trying to check out quite a few Blood TLV amv's at once since that's what I'm using for my current project... and there's a lot of them, so file changing got very tedious.

anyways, if it's easy to do [I don't know anything about programming], it would be a convenient reference that I would probably keep within the filename, if not, you know... it's just a suggestion... :)

Do a search for the full filename. Here's a random example.

Not as far as I know. The server hosting the file decides on the name.
