This is the kind of video that just needs the more "vivid" treatment that After Effects has. I want you to redo the whole thing again from scratch, maybe with a parallel song. You can still do it in Premiere. Second time is always better. Use less black fade in and fade outs, I think it throws people off.
One of the things that bothers me that could be the source of whatever problems I think I have with it is when you mention minimalism. Everyones accepts that Minimalistic art could be an extremely simplified version of something. But when you think about the minimalism in this slow video, honestly, it is only slowly edited because the song is slowly sung. It is just as equally proportional to any fast paced song music video in terms of editing. Little noises and slight melody shifts are all hit with a scene change, movement in frame, or effect. This is fine if it is done well, and I will agree it has brilliant spots. But next time, help yourself and think about limiting syncing for whatever movement minimalism is. To me it is completely the same as everything I can enjoy.
Good Job

New vid,and I haven't noticed it...
/gets.
Will edit in few hours or so.
--Edit :
Okay now,so is there a new wave of confusing vids incoming or what? If it's like that, then I'll need to check all of them >.>
Video was kind of...confusing. Especcially because of Anime source. Haven't seen it,but damn,it almost looks like Beyond The Clouds! Characters are alike, animation seems alike too... Damn, now that's really confusing
At first, those black and white dots appearing (like in those old movies) looked really out of the picture, but after first minute of watching I somehow got uswed to it,and it really fit all those little shakings
Sync was amazing, and I like the song too (it sounds simillar to the one Crack used in his vid),so I pretty much liked this vid.

This was very interesting, normally a video like this would be hardly worthy of my notice since it's drama more or less and it's editing is very simple due to the song but it was so weird that I was able to watch it a bit longer and actually untill the end. The song sounded like there was a whole bunch of timeencoding errors in it (which I think was intended though) so it had a very akward atmosphere and actually after your last video I expected something very sick at the end of th video like the male character killing the girl. To bad there wasn't anything like that. Anyway good video.

I loved this video, Oto. You once again prove that atypical sources can definitely go together and make something really cool. My main gripe is that it's really hard to watch much, because the audio source just isn't to my liking, and even though the sync and everything is extremely interesting and well-executed, I can't see myself coming back to this often at all.
Still, this is definitely something I enjoyed, very nice work

Funny, I didn't actually realize that about the motion-based sync but now that you mention it, it is there.jasper-isis wrote:Hooray! Good job! Nice panduck you got there in your poster.
Edit: So I just watched the final version, and I'm happy to report that I thought the first blip was a-okay now.
I'm trying to figure out what I like this video better than a few others you've released this year... I feel like it's because here you used a good deal of motion based synch as well as your usual texture based synch, and you know how much I like the former. But then, I can't be sure because it's all done in a subtle, right-at-the-level-of-consciousness manner (if I were distracted by someone talking in the next room while watching this, I would miss the connections and not enjoy this as much).
Which is funny because I think my first impression of this source was as really static and I kinda thought the video would turn out more that way.
I still focus a lot on surroundings/scenery/still life, but in something with good animation like this it's great that there IS plenty of motion going on. Also note how there's practically no faces in the video. I like doing that for some reason >__>
And yea, the whole "right-at-the-level-of-consciousness" thing is interesting, since it kinda reflects my approach to music like David Sylvian. You can only get any connections/enjoyment out of it if you focus on it. Thus artsiness!
Thanks a lot - and AWESOME picture (for those who don't know, jasper did the announcement/title picture for me)

Well in a lot of ways I knew what I was getting myself into and did it on purpose. Both the slightly-disjointed scene choices and the brightness of the footage generally kind of go along with my "vivid bleakness" idea.Ingow wrote:lulz yer artsy video reminds me of david firth cartoons![]()
I always love that kind of weird styles and stuff, but really this was a kind of random source to use for that kind of a concept IMO. It's way too bright and shiny and happy for the entire poetic sedate mood of the audio, I mean there even are obvious creepy factors in the audio and the video source screams ROMANCE LOVE at me with full power - or so it seems to me at least. Your effects are always on-time but they seem to be not really integrated into the video, more like overlays.
Anyways, in general I love your concept but I would've enjoyed the video more had it been more altered to fit the song/or had it used a more gloomy source.

Though I guess I deserve a kick for consciously trying to make a boring video >__>
Thanks!
Sylvian's stuff is great, but DEFINITELY an acquired taste. But even just his voice is pure gold.AphexTwin wrote:Awesome clip.
The song was great. Didn't know this artist. Now I have to check this.
The mood was good, the editing was neat.
Great minimalist/experimental video.
Thankyou! Glad the weirdness didn't turn you off.Falconone wrote:/gets
Edit:
Really good video.
I like the effects in it, they fits really good. The Flow of the video is also great, good emotions.
Thanks for that note about the mood. I wonder if Ingow (see response above) saw the movie yet or not - on the emotional level, my impression of the movie was definitely a lot bleaker than the pretty visuals suggest. Not that I don't like the pure romance/sentimental vids to it, but while I didn't find the movie depressing per se, really... it was bleak, for lack of a better word, and definitely didn't follow your typical romance or sentimental progression. And the further you go on the more emotionally-withdrawn the guy seems (but enough spoilers).Emong wrote:Wow, that was instant win, my friend![]()
I was really pulled into this by your original syncing and the mood in general. You captured the song just *perfectly* by your clip selection and syncing to those distorted sounds, not to leave the very appropriate effects unmentioned~ Yeah, it was deffinitely an experiment gone right![]()
While the mood was just perfect, I still wasn't a big fan of your clip selection because there seemed to be from little to none of progression in it. I'm not a fan of that type of a thing, even if the song is otherwise captured perfectly.. But.. I can't think of a better choice for your video source. I just saw this movie recently (and damn it was depressing as hell) and this video totally surprised me because it created a mood very similar to what I was feeling when I had finished watching the movie 0.0
I wonder about the clip selection. Like I said, I was going for a slightly blurry progression of things that focused on mood rather than storyline. To my mind it's a good thing, but yea well... blurry is as blurry does, I guess! And what comes to the artsy side, yeah, it was what you could call "artsy". I was a little sceptical about your intentions on this video you explained in the video description, because videos with that kind of a concept tend to turn out to be quite pretentious and... kitschy?I wouldn't say the same about your video. Deffinitely not. This was a positive exception to that rule
Awesome, awesome work, Otohiko! Instant keeper, even though I see myself growing somewhat bored with it in a few, thanks to the quite disposable clip selection.. But anyways, it goes to my favourites~
4.25/5
I just wish it was longerSomething like 5 minutes would have been perfect, imo~

Surprised. I personally wouldn't mind doing more of it, but I pretty much had to cut down on it since I thought even 4 minutes would bore the hell out of any viewer.
Glad to see there's still people with attention spans around

Big thanks for great response!

I would totally take you up on that challenge, unfortunately (even if we ignore the money requirement) I just don't have time and energy to invest into learning AE or remaking a fairly good already-finished AMV right now. It might sound like a cop-out on my part, but working a couple of part-time jobs, doing my thesis and supporting a few other hobbies - none of the above having to do anything with video technology - well... all I can say is, maybe later. I'm quite burned out, at least on this one, right now.Tash wrote:This is the kind of video that just needs the more "vivid" treatment that After Effects has. Funny you should mention a parallel song, since the album DOES have a parallel song to "The Only Daughter" called "The Good Son", which later forms basis for an album of remixes of these called "The Good Son vs. The Only Daughter"

There's an idea anyway.
Actually in many ways this IS a second take on a previous, similarly-slow Sylvian video I did 3 years ago. And I plan to come back to videos of this type later, so there's always room to use the lessons here.
Well, we could go on about what "minimalism" means for a long timeOne of the things that bothers me that could be the source of whatever problems I think I have with it is when you mention minimalism. Good Job

To me it was just an easy term to denote a video that is much slower-paced than average, uses a very sparse audio source, and does not rely on several key types of sync, most notably beat sync. If anything, the use of the term was a tactic on my part to caution people's expectations a little as regards a video to this particular source.
Ironically, for all my claims of minimalism, the project file for this one was by far the most complex I've done so far, especially in terms of layers/filters.
What's Blowout?Tash wrote:Needs a touch of blowout here and there. Maybe twice only.
(I only know the term blowout as used in the game STALKER, but I don't think you have radioactive discharges in mind....)
Thanks again! Always good to get your responses to this stuff.

Haha, it looks a lot like Beyond the Clouds since it was made by the same director, and uses an identical art style and character designs. I think they actually wanted it to look similar.Rapture** wrote:New vid,and I haven't noticed it...

Yea, glad you noticed the noise/dots too! I thought they fit in neatly, but not everyone did

Thanks!
Well I think a high-low dynamic was one thing that might've been missing, maybe on purpose. It is kinda a weird but attractive quality of the music here.Funky-kun wrote:Great atmosphere, editing was very solid. Video got better as it progressed. Video quality was win. But there was something missing... it is supposed to be experimental/romance but it isn't enough experimental nor enough romantic... But deffinately very enjoyable to watch

As far as romance - yea, it definitely wasn't very much a romance video. Anti-romance in some ways. Experiment-wise - yea, it was more a personal experiment. Definitely not a super-bold visual choice here.
Thanks

Haha, funny you should mention it, cause there's parts in this song I cut out which WERE rather creepy, i.e. "she won't even see it coming" and something to do with... vaseline?Warheart wrote:This was very interesting, normally a video like this would be hardly worthy of my notice since it's drama more or less and it's editing is very simple due to the song but it was so weird that I was able to watch it a bit longer and actually untill the end. Yea, totally understood. I can't be blamed for making easy-to-watch videos with this stuff like this. But I guess I'd rather make a good one-time impression with this sort of thing.
