Freestyle editing vs. consistent editing . . .

Post by macchinainterna » Thu Sep 20, 2007 4:29 pm

I'm just a little curious as to which type of editing most members on the site prefer (both in their videos, and others); freestyle (basically random, like Magic Pad) or consistent (following a coherent storyline and/or concept, like From the Ashes).

I actually prefer both, though I think freestyle has a greater capacity for exercising creativity.

Which do you prefer?

I like both, really, but I don't see myself ever making a 'freestyle' type video such as Magic Pad. I could never pull it off like Nostromo, or anyone else for that matter.

The idea of "freestyle" is a bit of an illusion. In all cases what you're doing is creating structure, conceptual and/or visual. You need to be able to make a video "flow", and that by default cannot be random. Even if your footage is random, your editing needs to have some sort of grounding to support the video.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

I agree with that, Oto. All videos have a concept, otherwise they wouldn't be made.

Also, I think that "greater capacity for exercising creativity" can be applied to both types that the OP mentioned. For example: Creating an alternate universe-type AMV. Tons of creativity there, but different from something like say, Magic Pad. Which is honestly just a up-beat dance video(Although a damn good one) with tons and tons of FX.

All and all, I prefer both like I said earlier.

I wouldn't really consider Magic Pad as a "freestyle" type AMV.

Although the scenes are from different anime, he links them together through the motion cam etc. I don't even think the scenes were randomly selected and put in, because I found the pace of the AMV really good.

Unless by "freestyle" you simply mean an AMV which doesn't intend to tell a story. Then just ignore all that bullshit I wrote :/

I think that's more along the lines of how I view "freestyle" editing. Perhaps I just couldn't find a better way to describe it until now.

Onto what you said about Magic Pad, I have to agree that the scenes felt less random because of how well they transitioned between one another. Maybe a different video would have been a better example.

With that said I also have to agree with Otohiko. As random as one's editing can be, there still needs to be some kind of structure to it for the video to actually work.

Depending on what mood im in, Id rather just watch pointless scenes added to music in a moderatly organized manner. Mind you after 9pm I enjoy plotted AMVs more because they keep me more awake

I wouldn't even give something that was thrown together without plan or order the honor of even calling itself an AMV. :?
