Re: Fanservice in AMVs
It is all perspective. Some ideas they play out in porn can't play out as well as they can in a hentai and some things they can't do at all in porn that they can put in hentai.LeeKitten wrote:nothing is better than the real thing.
If anime can make you emotional, maybe cry, get happy, or even cringe over violence, just like a book can then why not fanservice? I've never seen any sadder stories than some of the ones I've seen presented in anime. Samurai X, Grave of the Fireflies, Green Legend Ran.. these all are insanely sad animes. They can also make things insanely provocative in fanservice. They have a lot more control over character expressions in anime than they do in any live action films with actors/actresses IMO.

More of what you like, less of what you don't.Emong wrote:But, come on people, why to get hyped over homosexual pairs (in general)?
Also, IME, yaoi fans often think of fictional gay boys the way het fanboys think of fictional girls - as idealized creatures with no particular connection to real life. But a lot of them spill a lot of "ink" analyzing and re-analyzing that same question. Like lesbians who are all into gay male porn. Why? Only they know.
Anyway.
Why must people assume that you can only have either fanservice or real life? How about both in reasonable proportion? Sounds good to me.

Plah, I screwed up my post
I meant the crazy yaoi fan-girls screaming for real-life gay people. It's no awesome :/ Sometimes the line fades between fiction and real life, and while I agree that in anime, movies and other fictional stories they actually are objects of your fandom whereas is everything else, some people just have an annoying attitude towards real gay people :/ And sometimes it's the very same attitude even with fictional ones too, as if they couldn't tell the difference.
I have nothing against shonen-ai or shoujo-ai in general. I watch those series myself, too. But, to be honest, I forget about it after the first 5 minutes or so, unless if the series is dealing with homosexuality as a theme. I watch shoujo-ai or shonen-ai because the anime I like just has it, not the other way round. If you watch them just for the sake of homosexuality, then it's no less superficial than watching anime just for the sake of sexy looks of the characters :/ It's alright though, because we're dealing with fiction afterall, but you should really be aware of that too.
Homosexuality could be explored differently in animes or movies, too. It brings different kind of themes and relationships into the story, if it's at least decently beyond the superficial level. Imo, Loveless wouldn't have worked so well without the shoujo-ai pair in it. The side-plot would never have been so sensitive or fragile if they weren't both girls (Just an example) It's kind of rare though, that anime would treat homosexuality as something normal or equal without turning it into an object :/

Negima's not that bad. I actually didn't find the occasional fanservice in that to be that bad.CodeChrono wrote: Perfect Example: Negima is a cute series (which I thought I might let my younger sibling watch, until I saw a few episodes), but it is ruined by constant bikini scenes, panty shots, and/or other pointless stuff. I know some of the plot is derived from the fanservice, but I think it could have been better. X_X
Now, try reading the Negima manga sometime. Talk about your underaged panty shot every other page. There's a reason the manga's in shrink wrap in the store. "if I see one more 11 year old underwear, I'm gonna..."
I may respond to the rest of this later when it's not 3am. Bout time I move my ass to bed.

Huh? Occasional? Man, I don't know what the you were watching, but it sure as hell wasn't Negima.LeeKitten wrote:Negima's not that bad. I actually didn't find the occasional fanservice in that to be that bad.
Anyway, there's not much use in complaining about fanservice tbh, because as long as anime exists, so will fanservice. I mean, I'm pretty sure half of you wouldn't watch anime to see ugly ass characters walk around in fully-padded clothing leaving everything to the imagination. That being said, any show that focuses solely upon fanservice will no doubt fail and die off within a matter of seconds, as I'm sure that we're not all a bunch of sick, perverted otakus.

What I was getting at, is, I get a bit annoyed, when every damn series has a gay couple, like some twisted odd form of affirmative action.
Gays are people too, yes, fine with that. I know gay people, no odder than me (actually I am likely more odd than most gay people
).
But sometimes the inclusion just looks artificially forced.
It looks artificially forced in the same way that every damn anime girl out there, seems to be drawn about 2 cup sizes bigger than is likely realistic.
Ok, I like girls with boobs, I confess, but, come on, in a classroom setting, some girls just ain't gonna have much to work with.
Am I reality obsessed? Oh come on, if I was reality obsessed, I wouldn't be able to watch anime in the first place. After all, the eyes are way too big and the mouths way too small hehe.

Anime, one of the few things about the internet that doesn't make me hate the internet.

Right there is the problem with this thread. Since when was there something wrong with being superficial about the shows you watch? That's like saying you should have a morally superior and respectable reason for preferring chocolate milk to the plain kind. Why? There's nothing wrong with liking your milk sweet. There's nothing wrong with liking your entertainment especially entertaining (by having more, in excess, of the things that make it entertaining to you in the first place).Emong wrote:....then it's no less superficial than watching anime just for the sake of sexy looks of the characters :/
I'm surprised this thread got so long. The first post was ridiculous. "Keep the fanservice to a minimum unless there's a specific reason you're putting it in". Uh...since when? Why? Because you said so? Yeah, okay, I'll do that 'cause you said so. Just like the effect whores stop using effects when people tell them to "keep effects to a minimum unless there's a specific reason you're putting them in." Right. And we'll certainly never see another Naruto amv, since people have been telling them to stop for, oh, a few years now.
Come on people. Would a thread that starts out saying "Keep the action to a minimum unless there's a specific reason you're putting it in" get this many responses as if we all acknowledge that there's something morally wrong with being superficial and preferring our anime one way or another? It's anime. Entertainment. These are amvs made from anime. Show me an amv fan who has non-superficial (and thus morally respectful) reasons for liking what he likes and I'll show you a liar with a big head.
