What not to do in an AMV-And a question

Post by missind33 » Tue Sep 11, 2007 8:43 pm

I was watching some AMV's and it just got me annoyed when there was subtitles, mouth moving a lot (suppose to be the character talking in the anime), and no or off action or lip synching, or when an AMV is too long, when people just throw a long clip of something and just add music, or when an AMV is boring are some of the things that bother me. (What is technically a "bad" AMV)

So what are your pet peeves in an AMV?

Also, I wanted to ask something.
-Are you suppose to follow the lyrics in your AMV? (There are so many people that forget about the lyrics and just add a ton special effets so I don't know)
-What do you judge to be a good AMV? People keep on saying it's what you believe is a good AMV, but what I find a good AMV and others, or even judges at conventions might think differently.
I judge AMVs by orginality, if it does not contain my pet peeves, And if it has a "wow" factor.

There is nothing you are.. "supposed" to do in an amv. I've seen quite a few good videos that don't match lyrics. they are action videos.. but they are good at being thus. Lyric synch isn't something you're SUPPOSED to do, but it does help the flow.. sometimes. Unless of course you just show random scenes to perfectly match the lyrics that have like.. nothing to do with anything.

and.. what you pointed out is, yes. the obvious definition of a bad AMV.. random clips and stuff.

as for your other stuff....I've expressed my opinion on that about 49 times so..

Yeah, right now I am working on an Action video With the Song "Not Giving Up" by Cross fade and I had no idea if I am supposed to match the anime with the lyrics. In the song I am just at the begining before all the heavy rocking, (like within the first 30 seconds, if you listen to the song) And I didn't know if I should or should not match the anime with the lyrics.

Once again.. you aren't SUPPOSED to do any one thing.. You can match lyrics and create a flow. or you can ignore them as still have a good action vid.

also. Just for reference, I have not actually answered it 49 times, but I DO know that it is a topic often started here.

there are the usual things you can get angst'd at over (probably shouldn't do these things):

1. poor visual quality or poor audio quality -

Visual: macro-blocking, subtitles, interlacing, rainbowing, incorrect aspect ratio, cartoon network logos, divx logos, even personal "watermarks" get the angst sometimes, any thing that might distract from the crisp clean of the original source.

Audio: popping sounds, forgetting to disable the anime audio, crackling, "the tin can effect" pretty much when audio has been compressed then compressed some more and compressed again @_@

2. lipflap - when a character runs their mouth for really long, some people treat it like its worse than subtitles, and it can make a video pretty boring if the video is nothing but lipflap, but if used moderately lipflap isn't always terrible.

3. poor sense of timing - either cutting clips too short, not on beat, or letting them drag for minutes....
~~~~~~~~~~~~
but for the most part you should do what you want to do, edit how you want to edit... take the advice that you like, the stuff that makes sense to you..
also watch a lot of amvs (though it seems you have been around a bit) and find those things you don't like and don't do those things
i think the choices on how an AMV is made is up to the editor/maker
they may think it's great, so we shouldn't have to forcibly say it's bad, rather give friendly criticism... :roll:
but naturally, there are things that may..."annoy" us, but not others.
ex: i dislike it when it seems we are "watching" an anime with backround music. Basically, i'm saying that if someone puts a 30 second clip of an anime with any old music, i find it...unorthodox >.>
i also dislike contradicting themes...
such as a romance song while someone is being slaughtered O_O but in several cases i've seen, a little mix up can result in a great AMV...it's all about taste XD
Yes.. You are kinda just repeating the obvious here.
