Masking's just masking. An editing technique. So what's wrong with using it, misusing it or even abusing it? I don't get the point of the topic at all.

Allow me to bring up an ancient quote that would be relevant here

Nothing wrong with it, nope.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

So... anything relevant I'm missing in glowing/stroking characters?
Well sometimes people just Key out the colors around characters if possible saving you hours of masking; however, sometimes it looks really fugly and you have to feather it by atleast 5%. It creates the outer glow stuff you see.

I guess thats not every case. Sometimes Masking the character perfectly is just impossible to do. Long curves and really small ones are hard to do the most. To avoid making masking slightly obvious, you can just make it overly obvious as long as it's done simulating an FX. Like a frame for a picture so to speak. The frame enhances the picture depending how creative the frame is.

Just my thoughts.
"The people cannot be [...] always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented, in proportion to [...] the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions, it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to public liberty. What country can preserve its liberties, if it's rulers are not warned [...] that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants."-Thomas Jefferson

It doesn't really bother me when i see a outline so long as it matches with the vids style. Like, if it's during a action video, and it's being used to cover up bad masking, a thin black outling, a heavy blur on the outline for something else and maybe colors with blurs and stuff for a dance/fun video. I've fiddled around with outlines a lot. >_<

When your masking and considering a outline try saving the mask then you can use a Media Generator as the outline by loading it onto that, you can do lots of cool shit with that. I'm not sure how masks work with adobe and magix and stuff, but you should be able to do something like that and save us all from the boring everyday outlines that plague us. Anybody know any vids with really cool outlines?
But please keep in mind ...

Outlines are a privilege, not a right. Please don't abuse them :(
