In part I think it's the nature of the video and the original aim. A LOT for Conet and A LOT for AMV Hell are two very different numbers, I think.
I guess for one, A LOT is probably whatever exceeds people's expectations of the video.
For me, most of my AMVs have what they deserve; only one has what I'd consider A LOT (and that's just over one and a half thousand) - because that's more than I'd expect a weird video like mine to attract.
A non-anime video I once made definitely had A LOT - somewhere in the 10s of thousands (PROTIP: if you want a lot of cheap hits, make an MV for a well-organized fan community of video-virgins, i.e. something that hasn't had vids done to it. Instant large-scale promotion
Otherwise eh. Another thing I'll say - if someone wants A LOT of people to see their videos, con audiences are probably a safer bet.
