It's all relative mein friends!

In part I think it's the nature of the video and the original aim. A LOT for Conet and A LOT for AMV Hell are two very different numbers, I think.

I guess for one, A LOT is probably whatever exceeds people's expectations of the video.

For me, most of my AMVs have what they deserve; only one has what I'd consider A LOT (and that's just over one and a half thousand) - because that's more than I'd expect a weird video like mine to attract.

A non-anime video I once made definitely had A LOT - somewhere in the 10s of thousands (PROTIP: if you want a lot of cheap hits, make an MV for a well-organized fan community of video-virgins, i.e. something that hasn't had vids done to it. Instant large-scale promotion :P ).

Otherwise eh. Another thing I'll say - if someone wants A LOT of people to see their videos, con audiences are probably a safer bet.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

The whole "how to get a lot" thing is another thread entirely - though i do have the whole con whoring aspect down pat. This was just an attempt to see how people mentally scaled things.

I consider two downloads of my videos one more than necessary, and therefore "a whole lot."

The other one being myself, of course.

I break mine down by video type. Judging by the download count here versus the review count on the tube for the same videos, I lost most of my org downloaders in the last two years.

Recent Video (1.5 yrs old or less): 200 is a lot
Unknown Anime: 300 is a lot
Unpopular Pairing: 500 is a lot
Action/Drama/Character Profile: 600 is a lot
Het Romance: 1000 is a lot
Sailor Moon: 2000 is a lot
Popular Yaoi Pairing: 2500 is a lot
YYH: 3000 is a lot
Comedy: 6000 is a lot

Clearly I should be making more funny YYH yaoi videos. o.O

This looks like a whole lot.
 I had no idea it had that many stars... wow.

Hell3 has to be up there too though, right?
Hell 3 is actually down around 20,000. The star count isn't an accurate measure for it though, as it has a few million views across the tube and google video, and the torrents are popular enough that I haven't had to seed them since the day I made them available.

Lemme see here, I'll throw out some numbers for fun:

# DLs (After about a year)
0-100: An unknown AMV that was only posted via the org, not shown elsewhere or announced.

100-500: An AMV that might have appeared at a convention of two or attracted a small amount of attention from members of the editing community via announcements or recommendations.

500-1000: An AMV that might have been shown at multiple conventions or won at a small convention. Also it had attracted attention from the editing community spread by recommendations, announcements, or praise.

1000-5000: An AMV that was recognized at a large event, contest or convention. Also it has been widely recognized by the editing community and has developed a wider fanbase from across different websites and such.

5000-XXXXX: An AMV that is widely recognized by almost any follower of the hobby and has been recognized by national conventions, contests, and a large populous of AMV fans/editors all across the internet.

Just some loose estimates based off my own experiences with mine and friends AMVs. Granted it doesn't factor in how popular you are as an editor or your predetermined fanbase from either your reputation or nature of the video. Just more numbers to throw around as an answer. A great deal of exposure comes from conventions, contests, editor networking and vid pimping. If you make a modest effort then you can get your vid seen by alot of people.

My most downloaded Video only has 312 Downloads (and its up for about 8 month).
My most recent Video got 179 downloads within 18 days (I was pretty shocked that it got downloaded often like that in such "short time" compared to my other videos).

the vid that has more downloads for me is 452 and it has been there since march of this year, but is a short vid so people surelly are more inclined to download a short small-size video :P

Also a lot of my AMVs got downloaded more than 100 times when I announced them, so the announcement affects in the begining and then the downloads increase at a slow rate (in my case, dunno how it is for anybody else).

for me a whole lot would be 1000, since 100 is good enough for me, and 10 times the good is a "whole lot" for me XD.

it also depends on the amount of time a video has been available...

my most dled LOCAL video (Walking in the Butterflies) has been about for a year and 3 months

LOCAL (2504)

while Something Fishy has been out for just over 3 months and it has passed that already (if you count direct downloads)

DIRECT (1079)
LOCAL (1784)

@_@
this kinda weirds me out mostly because I'm not used to so many downloads in such a short amount of time.
