Codec Problems.

Lately, I've been having a lot of codec problems.

I cannot open many files with anything other than Winamp. If I try any other programs, they don't play the video at all or make the video full of different colored blocks. G-Spot tells me that all the codecs are installed. It must be some interference. In the "Direct Show" info window in Winamp when playing the .avi files, it says that Avi Splitter, ffdshow MPEG-4 video decoder, and MPEG layer 3 are being used to play the files. I thought I had uninstalled Ffdshow. When clicking ffdshow it shows a bunch of codecs. My friend and I tried playing around with the ffdshow options for codecs to see if anything would work, but now I don't remember how the "decoder" sections were originally set for each codec (didn't seem to do anything anyway ). I think it's a matter of setting the codecs correctly, either as libavcodec, disabled, XVID, etc. Here is the list:

Direct-X 8 or newer installed?

Div3 & Div4 are common files ( Div5 & Div6 were HQA's hacks and Angel Potion 1 & 2 )
MP41, MP42 and MP43 are MicroSofts little Gems'
and RPZA was the best codec that Apple ever made.
QPEG 1 & 2 were horrable >_< -- just plain BAD!

Active-X installed ? ( not really needed these days! )

directshow problem buddy. winamp is ignoring directshow and the others are not. try uninstalling ffdshow and any traces of it and I mean ALL and then reinstall (although i know that won't help, unless you install a codec pack that can RULE ffdshow).

Note: the ffdshow referenced in the first post is also outdated. Yes, I can tell this simply from the listing - newer versions have H.264 listed as the first item and also include Snow toward the bottom.

Choose one of the nightly builds.

Other suggestions: instead of having some set on XviD, use libavcodec like with the rest. Disable MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 decoding (unless you don't have any other MPEG-2 decoder - other MPEG-1 & MPEG-2 decoders, even the stock Windows ones, work better in my experience; I chalk it up to the focus on supporting predominantly MPEG-4 or similarly contemporary technologies, that some of the others tend to get neglected).

I'm going to try out your suggestions everyone! I keep trying to uninstall FFDSHOW, but nothing seems to be working. FFDSHOW still seems to be playing everything.

I think this is from when I installed the K-Lite codec pack ages ago, before I realized codec packs aren't always a good idea. I haven't been able to remove all the codecs yet from my system. I kept getting errors during the uninstall (*hits head for not taking note of which codecs wouldn't uninstall*).

You can try using a utility that does the dirty job of removing bad codecs and registry entries forcefully. I don't remember the name right now but the good folks here at a-m-v.org might know .

.. so
.. un-installing a bad program is not a problem!
( but that's just an old school way of thinking about programs that do you a dis-favor! )
